It turns out this fails silently (I haven't figured out why
yet).
Actually worse than silently, it tells me it succeeded, but
when I query
the LDAP server I see that it did not. When I manually add
the user to
the group using the same command that the script is using,
it works, so
I probably just need to figure out what's wrong with the
script.

Thanks for the suggestion, it gave me the idea to check this
manually!

could you post the exact command that works on in your shell
but
fails in the script (minus passwords/sensitive data)?
maybe some escaping is happening by the shell?

you also forgot to post the relevant log entries from your
slapd which
is essential for checking what went wrong.

if the two commans really are identical then the only
difference can
be in the environment: PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, etc.
note that if you're using SASL (no -x switch for for ldap
command
line tools) the authenticationId is constructed from $USER
(unless
given on the command line with -U).
