mc doesn't work on console

If I try to start mc (midnight commander) on a text console
I get a black
screen with one horizontal blue strip 1 char thick 2 chars
from the bottom
of the screen. It doesn't seem to work and behaves
unpredictably. For example
if I type "ls", instead of a list of files I get
the whole screen blue.
If I type "reset", the terminal doesn't start
looking like a terminal again.

The screen is default VGA 80x25 after bootup.

Are you experiencing the same problem? In xterm it works
fine.

With TERM=xterm-color I experience what you describe.  With
TERM=vt220
it works just fine (albeit in black and white).

With TERM=pcvt25 it works with color...
