Powerbook G3 lombard Bronze

I have a powerbook G3 lombard 'bronze' keyboard. My goal
is to get it to
move beyond 8 bit color depth. I have tried following the
directions in
/usr/X11R6/README and they have failed for me. I have also
tried setting
the display depth to 24 in open firmware so that the
framebuffer can run
straight from that but i have not been able to figure that
out.

Any help in helping me get beyond 8 bit color depth or if a
dev would
just tell me that the team dropped support for graphic chips
on older
powerbooks that would be great.
