Hi,
I have a powermac 8600 I have managed to netboot with the
boot.mac, but
with the scsi disk I want to install onto, it says: sd0 at
scsibus0 targ
0 lun 0: <IBM, DNES-309170W, SAH0> SCSI3 0/direct
fixed sd0: drive
offline instead of saying the geometry. If I try to do fdisk
-i -c -h -s
sd0 using the specifications here:
http://deadstart.net/NeXT/disktab/ibmDNES-309170.html
it says "sector
argument too large" even though I have another drive
that is detected as
having more sectors per track than that. If I try any other
geometry
such as the same number of total sectors with 255 heads and
63 sectors
per track, then I get DIOCGDINFO: Input/output error and
error
initializing MBR: Input/output error. Is there anything else
I can do to
get this disk to work or is it hopeless? Thanks.

You won't really be able to boot from your disk yet. Boot
the kernel
from network and hardcode root to sd0a. Just set up your
slices with
disklabel.

I get Input/output error if I try to do anything with
disklable also.
It's possible the whole disk is just bad, I haven't been
able to do
anything else with it. In order for it to be detected at all
I had to
remove a jumper for "ti sync negotiation" and I've
tried jumpering the
termination power and termination enable jumpers with no
change. Are
there any other jumper settings that could fix this? I had
assumed that
if the drive was detected the jumper settings were okay but
maybe not.
Thanks, Nick

I have seen this before the disk was bad if you can just
replace it and
it should work fine my 9500MP was bit by this (a bad IBM
harddrive
*SHOCKING*)

And yes you still cannot boot from disk, i have been working
on this off
and on but havent made any progress yet.

Okay, thanks. I'll see what I can do about getting another
disk, most of
my scsi disks are sca, so maybe I will need to get yet
another
adapter...
