sorry if this is off-topic.. i'd like to know if i can get
my radeon
9200 pci to run xorg and blender on openbsd for ppc.. i had
an nvidia
card beforehand, where xorg worked quite well, but not glx,
so i opted
for a radeon instead, which was not cheap.
this card is supposed to be supported by xorg, but
suprisingly, it
hasn't worked for me yet
all i want to do (for now) is get X and blender running, so
i can get back work
all help will be tremendously appreciated.
thanks,
-carlos

some things i perhaps failed to mention:
when i type startx, it crashes like this:
xauth: creating new authority file /home/blah/blah/blah
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server
shutdown)
i know this card is supported by Xorg, but despite it having
been
identified by the system (as shown by dmesg), Xorg.0.log
still says
"No devices to configure. Configuration failed."
yes, it seems like
it tries out different drivers, but none work. i understand
that this
newest release of xorg is very modular and that even the
drivers are
so, but i also understand that xenocara comes with all of
the
modularized drivers already included. am i comprehending
this
correctly, or do i have to download and compile my
"radeon" driver?
i am also not sure if i'll be able to run glx on it.. i have
searched
google far and wide and have read arguments for both. ie:
some people
say it will, while others say it won't. does glx depend on
dri? if so,
is dri supported by openbsd? can i get glx without dri?
here's an example: a forum post that hints how i'm
completely fucked,
but not really.
http://www.sudhian.com/index.php?/forums/viewth
read/97688/#851028
i'm tired of having to piece toghether a solution from all
of these
frustratingly half-true assumptions. mind you, i don't want
fancy
superfluous xgl eyecandy, but rather glx, so i can use
blender, to do
serious work.
so i'd like to hear some words of reassurance. ie: if it is
possible,
and what i have to do to get it to run.
i know this list is for developers, but i figured i'd post
here first
because you guys know what you're doing. if i have to take
it
somewhere else, please tell me where.
much thanks in advance,
-carlos

Maybe you need an /etc/X11/xorg.conf? To, you know, spell
things out a
bit. Mine has the following:
...
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName "ATI Radeon R480 X850 XT PE"
Driver "radeon"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "BusType" "PCIE"
EndSection
...
The thing that my help you is the "BusID"
definition. You will have a
different "BusType" and "BusID". I
don't know about mapppc, but on
i386/amd64 I used pcidump(8) to find its "address"
(1:0:0).
Also radeon(4) is your friend.

Please install the sysutils/pciutils port and run pcidump -v
and send us
the result. Apparently your pci card is connected to a PCI
domain that's
not seen by X by default.
You may get your card to be seen by X by linking /dev/pci to
the correct
/dev/pci<n> device corresponding to the domain where
your card lives.

i tried getting the ports with cvsup, but cvsup is not
available for
ppc.. :-( ..yes, i'm a noob and it'll take my a while to
learn how to
install ports.. not wanting to give up, i settled for
downloading it
from ports, but
ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.2/packages/powerpc/pciut
ils-2.2.4p0.tgz
doesn't contain pcidump, only other tools.. in any case, i
typed
"whereis pcidump" or "man pcidump" and
got nowhere...
so i'm stuck.. any ideas or suggestions?

i'm sure you'll be able to teach me how to do that as soon
as i send
in pcidump's result.

This is not FreeBSD, here cvsup is not the preffered way to
get sources,
CVS is. http://www.openbs

It's part of base, /usr/sbin/pcidump

There's nothing wrong with using CVSup, though. They even
have a link
to a page with instructions for using it on the front
page...

pcidump isn't part of the base in 4.2-release/stable.

cvsup will not work on powerpc though. its i386 only (thank
you m4).
besides, 'cvs up' works in the base system.

Sorry I meant 'lspci'. pcidump has been added recently to
-current, but
iirc you're running 4.2, not -current.
