Calc testing question

I'm doing some TCM work today and  wanted to open a
".mer" text file 
(Word's csv format) in Calc.

When I choose File/Open in Excel and point at a .mer file, a
wizard 
opens that lets me declare the delimiter, data format of
columns, 
etc. and loads the data into a spreadsheet.

But when I choose File/Open in Calc and point at the same 
file, it 
will only open the file in Writer instead of importing it
into a 
sheet.

I am not a heavy spreadsheet user, do not have time to RTFM
for Calc, 
hoping someone can save me some time here so I can just do
these 
tests. How do I open or import a delimited data file into
Calc?
