HI EVERYONE
I'M KEEN TO TEST PORTABLE OPENOFFICE.ORG, SINCE MOST
VIETNAMESE USERS
DO NOT HAVE COMPUTERS OF THEIR OWN, AND AT BEST WILL BE
ACCESSING
THEM VIA SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY, WORK OR AN INTERNET CAFé, IN
SHORT:
SOMEONE ELSE'S COMPUTER. WE HAD FRANTIC ENQUIRIES BACK IN
RELEASE
CYCLE OPENOFFICE.ORG 2.1 ABOUT A PORTABLE VERSION. PORTABLE
APPS
DEFINITELY EMPOWER PEOPLE WITH FEW RESOURCES.
THE PORTABLE AQUA FILE DOWNLOADED OK. I ASKED MY HUSBAND TO
BRING ME
HOME A USB THUMB DRIVE, HOPING 1 GB WOULD BE ENOUGH. HE SAYS
IT'S A
"CHEAP AND NASTY" BRAND (THE THUMB DRIVE, NOT
OPENOFFICE.ORG ;) ),
BUT IT SEEMS TO BE WORKING.
1. INSTALLATION
I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS, AND EVERYTHING SEEMED TO WORK.
(I
VOLUNTEER TO REVIEW THE TEXT FOR THE LANGUAGE PACK SCRIPT
MESSAGE
WINDOWS. ;) )
THE LANGUAGE PACK INSTALL ALSO WORKED. I WAS IMPRESSED THAT
THE
LANGUAGE-PACK INSTALL SCRIPT FOUND AND IDENTIFIED ALL MY
DIFFERENT
OPENOFFICE.ORG INSTALLS ON MY HARD DRIVE, AS WELL AS THE ONE
ON THE
USB DRIVE.
I DRAGGED ONE OF THE OPENOFFICE.ORG ICONS INTO MY DOCK, AS
INSTRUCTED.
2. RUNNING THE APP.
I UNMOUNTED MY USB DRIVE, THEN REMOUNTED IT. I CLICKED ON
THE WRITER
ICON IN MY DOCK, AND AN OPENOFFICE.ORG ICON APPEARED.
(THIS IS NOT REALLY INTUITIVE, BECAUSE WHEN I CAME BACK TO
THE APP, I
CLICKED ON THE WRITER ICON TO RETURN TO MY DOCUMENT, AND IT
STARTED
LOADING ANOTHER OPENOFFICE.ORG INSTANCE. I'M NOT SURE HOW WE
GET
AROUND THIS, BUT WE REALLY NEED ONLY ONE OPENOFFICE.ORG
ICON, OR AN
EASIER WAY TO REMIND THE USER OF WHICH ICON DOES WHAT.)
THE SETUP PROCESS WORKED. WHEN I CLICKED ON
"FINISH", INSTEAD OF THE
OPENOFFICE.ORG SPLASH SCREEN, I SAW A BLANK WHITE RECTANGLE,
WITH A
FULL PROGRESS BAR DOWN THE BOTTOM.
THE WRITER WINDOW LOADED, SLOWLY, FIRST DISPLAYING AS A BIG
BLACK
RECTANGLE FOR A WHILE. INPUTTING TEXT WAS VERY SLOW AT FIRST
(WAIT
ICON SHOWN), BUT THEN IT SPED UP.
BIG PLUS: THE APP IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZED MY KEYBOARD LAYOUT
CHOICES,
AND INPUT VIETNAMESE TEXT CORRECTLY. IT ALSO PICKED UP ON MY
TEXTEXPANDER AUTOTEXT, AND ON DEFAULT FOLDER X'S ENHANCED
OPEN AND
SAVE DIALOGUES.
IN SHORT, IT SEEMS TO HOOK INTO THE OSX INTERFACE
EFFECTIVELY.
I WAS ABLE TO SAVE A FILE ON MY HARD DRIVE, USING VIETNAMESE
CHARACTERS.
SO FAR, VERY GOOD.

Hi Clythie

Thank you for this report.
I even didn't know by now that a Mac portable OOo existed!
But the
germanophone project is sucessfull in fundraising by
offering USB-Sticks
with printed OOo-Logo on it and an pre-installed
portable.apps-suite
(Windows) for people giving a sufficient donation to the
project.
Would you please give the url of the portable mac aqua to
me?

FreeSMUG has a fairly comprehensive list of portable apps
for OS X
(http://www.frees
mug.org/portableapps), though their portable OOo is
the X11 version. I haven't seen the Aqua version anywhere
yet.

AQUA TO ME?
IT'S JUST AN EARLY TEST VERSION, AN ALPHA. I THOUGHT THIS
WAS THE
RIGHT PLACE TO REPORT BACK. I HOPE I HAVEN'T STUFFED UP. :S
___
TEST 2
TODAY, I HANDED THE USB KEY TO MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER, WHO USES
OUR MAC
MINI (ALSO INTEL). SHE IS AN EMBYRO GRAPHIC ARTIST, AND A
FAIR
REPRESENTATIVE OF OUR YOUNGER GENERATION OF USERS. SHE
HADN'T USED
OPENOFFICE.ORG BEFORE. SHE MOSTLY LIVES IN PHOTOSHOP,
OMNIWEB,
ITUNES, MPLAYER, THE DASHBOARD AND YAHOO MESSENGER. HER IDEA
OF TEXT-
MODE IS TO OPEN TEXTEDIT.
WE DID NO PRELIMINARY SETUP, NO LANGUAGE PACK INSTALL OR
DRAGGING OF
ANY ICONS TO THE DOCK. I THOUGHT THAT WOULD DEMONSTRATE THE
"QUICK
EDIT/PRINT" SITUATION OF AN ORDINARY USER AT WORK,
SCHOOL/UNI,
INTERNET CAFé ETC.
SHE PLUGGED IN THE USB KEY, THEN DOUBLE-CLICKED ON THE
WRITER ICON ON
THE KEY. THIS TIME, THE SPLASH SCREEN SHOWED PROPERLY. THE
WRITER
WINDOW ONLY DISPLAYED AS A BLACK RECTANGLE AT FIRST, AND
STAYED THAT
WAY FOR QUITE A WHILE. IN ALL, THE APP TOOK AT LEAST FIVE
MINUTES TO
LOAD.
THAT HAS TO IMPROVE. I CAN'T SEE PEOPLE BEING WILLING TO SIT
AND WAIT
FOR OVER FIVE MINUTES WHILE AN APP LOADS. MY DAUGHTER
IMMEDIATELY
ASSUMED IT WASN'T LOADING, SINCE FOR AT LEAST HALF THAT TIME
THERE
WAS NO PROGRESS BAR/MESSAGE, NO EVIDENCE OF ANYTHING
HAPPENING. SHE
ALSO THOUGHT THE BLACK WINDOW WAS AN ERROR. (SHE HAS BEEN
USING A MAC
SINCE THE AGE OF 2.) I THINK MOST USERS WOULD ASSUME THE
SAME.
ALSO, SHE EXPECTED THAT OPENOFFICE.ORG WOULD SUPPORT HER
JAPANESE
KEYBOARD LAYOUTS OUT OF THE BOX. HER OTHER OSX APPS DO. SHE
DOESN'T
KNOW ABOUT LOCALES, AND DOESN'T EXPECT TO HAVE TO SETUP HER
SYSTEM TO
USE OTHER LANGUAGES. SHE HAS HER SYSTEM PREFS SET TO GIVE
SECOND
PRIORITY TO JAPANESE, AND DOESN'T EXPECT TO HAVE TO DO
ANYTHING ELSE
(IF THAT).
WHEN INPUTTING JAPANESE JUST CREATED WHITE BOXES, SHE WAS
UNIMPRESSED. IS THERE ANY WAY WE CAN USE THE OSX SYSTEM
PREFS TO
SUPPORT LANGUAGES THE WAY OTHER OSX APPS DO? NOT NECESSARILY
TO
LOCALIZE THE WHOLE APP, BUT SIMPLY TO SUPPORT DISPLAY AND
INPUT OF
OTHER LANGUAGES.
THIS CONCLUDES TEST 2. THE USER DID NOT SAY, "HEY, I
WANT TO KEEP THAT!"
THEN AGAIN, SHE DOESN'T USE OFFICE PROGRAMS. SHE USES
TEXTEDIT AND
PHOTOSHOP FOR HOMEWORK, PAGES AND KEYNOTE IF THEIR FEATURES
ARE
REQUIRED. SHE WOULDN'T KNOW A SPREADSHEET OR DATABASE IF SHE
FELL
OVER ONE. IF WE WANT TO ADD MORE YOUNG USERS TO OUR
DEMOGRAPHIC, WE
NEED TO INTEGRATE OPENOFFICE.ORG INTO THE FUNCTIONS THEY
_DO_ USE.

Ok, great
FYI, the full installation needs less than 390MB on the USB
key, and any
other support works. In short, install it wherever you
want.

Yes, I agree. The problem is in the design, and someting is
wrong.
As I explained .. somewhere ( )
recently, separated applications is
not the correct design, because
we have 6 icons => one application
The opposite is imho the solution: one application, asking
what,
through 6 possibilities. imho, the "New"
OpenOffice.org menu is wrongly
designed too in that sense.

Well spoted: this is a bug. Only at first launch, though.

Thank you. I'll have a look to see if Universal Binary is a
good
solution for that. If so, I'll give it a try. The immediate
drawback is
the needed place on the key: 550MB approximatively ( if I
remember
correctly the size the UB version of OpenOffice.org I tested
was)
Last but not least, you are welcome to redesign the
application: I
prefer have user(s) point of view first, instead of the dev
one. I have
not too much time to help you, but I really appreciated your
feedback.

Several issues can occur: USB not working properly ( I know
some cases
), USB key model using USB 1.1 (instead of adviced 2.0 ),
and/or some
file system check on your key, because not correctly
unmounted last
time, or spotlight doing some work in background... the real
cause is
not easy to discover remotely, but top and some other tools
could be
helpfull when the issue occurs.
Such slow down never occured for me, thank you for reporting
it, I'll
have a closer look on that, and I'll try to find other
testers, to
isolate the real cause.

Sure, but first isolate the real cause.

Don't remember, I put the first Aqua version I found on my
disk, for
testing purpose: this is just a try and a not well tested
solution.
More, the version I put inside is Carbon version, and I have
seen a lot
of improvement on Coca version since.
We just do our best, but integrate all changes needs time,
and here is
the problem.

I'm pretty sure Herbert Duerr and Etsushi Kato fixed that
recently, but
on Cocoa version only.

I want to keep that!"
This means we have work, and need help in the same time.
Thanks again for your feedback,

On Macs the USB port in general is very slow and not very
responsable when using it with OS X. I don't know if this is
kind
of "forced" by Apple so that users switch to the
Apple favored
FireWire since other -nixes don't show this significant slow
down
when installed on the IntelMac and neither does Windows XP
installed via BootCamp so even if the USB chips in the
IntelMacs
aren't the fastest ones out there they cannot be the solemn
reason
for the slowness of USB.
Did you in compare the launch via USB with the launch on a
hdd. Is
the launch on a hdd as slow as the one from USB?
Kind regards,
Eric Hoch

This will depend on the drive. Flash drives have a rated
read and
write speed. If you have a slower drive, then it will take
ooo longer
to open.
I'll take an example
http://tinyurl.com/2uspl4
a>
It has a 3MB/sec write and 6MB/sec read speed. That is one
problem
with the very cheap flash drives. This is too slow for
running apps off.
On the other hand there is the faster
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.a
spx?IMODULE=CT4GBUFDWHTH00
which is 13MB/sec write and 25MB/sec, which is much more
likely to be
able to support
It is sometimes very difficult to find the information like
this
about the flash drives.
A faster ooo is much better.
Is OpenOffice.org prefs compatible across different
platforms?

Good idea!

Just one possibility: If you use an Apple Keyboard to plug
in there an
USB device, you'll always have USB 1.1 instead of 2.0 an
therefore a
very slow data rate.
To get a applicatin from a stick working, you always must
plug in the
USB stick directly to the Mac, not into the Keyboard.
I don't know if that happened, but - just in case

I WILL TRY TO TEST IT FROM THE HDD, AND ALSO FROM THE
BUILT-IN USB
PORT DIRECTLY.
I REMEMBER NOW THAT MY DAUGHTER PLUGGED THE USB KEY INTO HER
USB
_HUB_, NOT THE DIRECT PORT. THE HUB ALREADY HAS THE
MULTIFUNCTION
PRINTER, HER FLATBED SCANNER AND HER GRAPHICS TABLET
CONNECTED
(SUPPORTING MY DAUGHTER'S GRAPHICS HABIT IS A MAJOR
FINANCIAL
EFFORT). THE PRINTER IS ONLY A FEW MONTHS OLD, THE GRAPHICS
TABLET IS
A WACOM GRAPHIRE II, I THINK, AND THE SCANNER IS RATHER OLD,
SO IT
MIGHT BE USB 1, I SUPPOSE. SHE DOESN'T NOTICE ANY SLOWNESS

NOTICE THAT WHEN I REPORTED BACK INITIALLY. (THE MAC
KEYBOARD IS
PLUGGED INTO THE MAC MINI DIRECTLY, AND WE DON'T DAISY-CHAIN
ANYTHING
ONTO IT.)

THAT'S A GOOD POINT. IT'S GOING TO BE AWKWARD IF PEOPLE
ASSUME YOU
CAN RUN PORTABLE APPS FROM _ANY_ USB DRIVE, AND GET A REALLY
SLOW
EXPERIENCE WITH OPENOFFICE.ORG. WE NEED SOME WAY OF
MARKETING THAT
POSITIVELY:
___
FREE SOFTWARE LIKE OPENOFFICE.ORG CAN BE OF HIGH QUALITY:
CHEAP
HARDWARE RARELY IS. RUN OPENOFFICE.ORG PORTABLE ON AT LEAST
A XX/SEC
USB DRIVE FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE.

MY GENERIC USB DRIVE ONLY HAS THE CHAIN STORE NAME AND
ADVERTIZING
BLURB, NO OTHER INFO. MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE HELD OUT FOR
SOMETHING
SNAZZIER. ;)

DEFINITELY. WE DON'T WANT PEOPLE SAYING, "IT'S A PAIN
TO LOAD."

PERHAPS THE LINUX PREFS WILL TRANSFER TO OTHER LINUX
SYSTEMS? OSX TO
OSX SHOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM.
ANYWAY, TO END ON A POSITIVE NOTE, IT WAS SUCH A RELIEF TO
BE ABLE TO
OPEN OPENOFFICE.ORG WITHOUT X11! THIS IS DEFINITELY A HUGE
STEP
FORWARD FOR OPENOFFICE.ORG MAC.
