Use whois. That will tell you authoritatively, and if the
.com (or
whichever TLD you're going for) registrars are crooked, you
have lost
anyway.

Benny is right, proposed name should also need to be
available. Also, about 
the most voted name,
it may be my interpretation, but the name CallWeaver sucks.
Sounds like a 
proprietary brand.

We need a name, but we're developers, engineers. Ask your
wives, your 
children. Branding (even in
terms of an Open Source organization, in order to receive
donations, etc.) 
is a very important part
of the project's development.
