I strongly disagree with this change.
AM_MAINTAINER_MODE is not to _add_ a maintainer mode but to
disable
automatic rebuild rules. You can still activate the rules
using
--enable-maintainer-mode
I think it is far more comfortable for users to have
AM_MAINTAINER_MODE. I found a page [1] with some pros and
cons.
