I entered the correct PIN only once on the reader pinpad immediately after the first reader-beep and then I waited for the next reader-beep without entering the PIN again. Then I terminated the command.

 

Just for fun I tried out to enter an incorrect PIN and in this case the "pkcs11 --login --test"-command stops with the following reasonable message:

 

sec-c:201:sc_pin-cmd: returning-with: PIN code or PIN incorrect

error: PKCS11 function C_Login failed: CKR_PIN_INCORRECT (0xa0)

 

So it seems as the software can distinguish between correct and incorrect PINs at least.
