for building something you gonna sell (freelance gig for ex)

another way to see it is that FB3 standard is only 250$
so you can easily reimburse that price with any small Flex project

or you can go with a 60 days trial
finish your small project within those 2 month
and then buy the license

for study/learn/etc.
ant/mxmlc (in short the SDK + other open source stuff) is enought to get started
and yeah FD can help too but only on windows

I also saw examples with TextMate/TextWrangler that even make use of the FlashDeBugger from Adobe. I never tried them though, because I use eclipse mainly. But a nice simple gui that just works on the commandline tool would be nice..
