I'd like to see if see if a Linux distro is already there.
Can you point me to documentation or tell me how to check
(and boot) a
distro
if it's there. Also, I don't have the charging cradle and
hence
no serial cable.

If one is installed, it should just boot after a short delay
on the "penguin" 
bootlaoder screen. Unfortunately the only way I have
attempted to install one 
used the serial cable, so I can't really advise you how to
install one 
without it. I believe I have read a web page saying that it
is possible 
somewhere in my travels.
