Yeahh the main idea is think "in sets" instead of
thinking "in
records". Unfortunately many programmers either simply
cannot do that
or don't know that they must do that. So most probably the
best
results you'd achieve throwing out all this stuff and
rewriting
everything from scratch (or at least programm code you'd
identify as
slowest and most often executed).
Of course it depends on many factors like:
- is it even possible
- is you/your management willing to put initially quite much
efforts
or better make small patches in longer time
- whether you have enough resources to do that
- is this soft worthy enough to do that
- etc...
