Thanks for your input,

I really like the solution proposed by Jean-Hilaire :
Build RAC on 1 node, transfer your data to it and then add
the other node.
So you can add a node to a Cluster environment without any
down time.
Even if the registration of Node 2 fails and you have to
restore your original cluster configuration ?
And .... You cannot drop the node added from a failed
install .. and ...

Tks again for your answers,

Absolutely. The only case, when you can do the better
things, is if you have
an instance in ASM already. Else you wil need to migrate it
into the
clustered file system, ASM or raw device anyway, so proposed
method works
better and is easy to implement.

Another (possible) choice is to set up RAC as a standby
database and then
switchover so it became primary, then reinstall old primary
as a second
node.

Hi,

You don't need to do so. Let say you have two nodes A (the
current
database host) and B (a new node).
If you plan to go RAC, you can keep your database in the
current node A.
You make the installations and configuration on the
remaining node B. You
can have a RAC database running with just one instance on
one node.
When Cluster ware, Oracle RAC is installed and ready to
use, you move your
database to B as a RAC database. Your system is then
available to your users
and you can now add the node A to your cluster, install
Oracle RAC, and
start an instance of your database on it.

I know it is probably not recommended -
But is it possible to install Oracle clusterware ( + patch
10.2.0.2 )
while an instance is running on 1 node ?

Everything will be setup in advance :
Interconnect + Shared storage + host/accounts equivalencies
... + Full
backup ..

The goal is to try to decrease a system downtime when going
to RAC ..
( And not having to rebuild a live instance/OS too .. )

Thanks in advance for sharing your ideas,

64 bit Linux _ no collaboration suite - and other 32 bit limitations

At home I have been using Suse Linux Enterprise server 9.3
for some time now
because I wanted to test some Oracle software

If you want to install a database like 10g rel 2 everything
works fine

But if you want to use other software from Oracle, I am a
bit disappointed

Red Hat ES and Suse are the only two certified Linux
platforms ( Recently
there were some development that I do not consider) but on
the 64 bit
platform there are some limitations. Recently I tried to
install Oracle
Collaboration Suite but my conclusion is that it is
impossible on a 64 bit
platform

Besides that, the Oracle Application Server infrastructure
database runs in
a separate 32 bit shell, which make things more complicated
(e.g. linux32 bash)

The application server uses a 32 bit JDK. Some versions of
the Oracle HTTP
server are 32 bit too.

In case you want to use more than just the oracle database
on linux you
better stay with a 32 bit hardware platform
