Re: 2.6.5-7.283 x86_64 and linking error - ld: unrecognized option '--as-needed'

The SA should build/bootstrap a new gcc to a different
location, and leave the OS delivered gcc alone.  He could
use Software Maintenance to reinstall the OS delivered gcc
(probably need some online updates after).
