Hi:

I did some digging, and I think I may have found a problem
in
gnome-speech: both the DECtalk and IBMTTS drivers force a
conversion the
encoding of the incoming text from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1.
There's an old
bug for this: htt
p://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=321658.

I'm not sure how to resolve the problem. Maybe the DECtalk
or IBMTTS
folks might be able to provide an idea for how to determine
which
encoding to use for the various voices?

Note that the new driver for Cepstral's Swift engine uses
UTF-8
throughout, as do the Loquendo and Festival drivers, so they
may not
suffer from the same problem.
