Hello all:
I tried to search the archives; however, the indexes are
being re-built. This makes the searches unavailable.
Can speakup and orca run together at the same time? I would
like to maintain my boot up accessibility.
I would also like to enable orca for gdm login. I'm the
only one who uses this system.
I'm running fedora 6.
Where is a list of linux console key combinations? I know
once gdm comes up, one can do an control-alt-f1 to get a
text login
using getty. I am interested on learning how to get back to
the X session.
I am very impressed with orca so far. And am very
encouraged with its accessibility. It is very easy to use.
I read the design
doc and impressed with the design philosophy.
Many Thanks.
Terry

Yes, but only if you're using different speech devices. This
will be
easy if you're using a hardware speech synth with Speakup.
There are other issues, though ...
Speakup's screen review is on the numpad with numlock off.
Orca's is
with numlock on.
You may find it important to kill Speakup in the gui console
by pressing
PrintScreen. However, this will launch the Screenshot
application which
you'll need to cancel using Orca.

Last time I tried to set this up with Fedora was just before
the release
of FC6. It was broken at that time. Don't know if it's been
fixed, but I
did inform the Red Hat accessibility person about this.

Your gui console will be the first undefined tty in
/etc/inittab. It's
tty7 by default. I suggest you get in the habit of switching
consoles
using Ctrl+Alt+FN where FN is one of the function keys. In
other words,
add the Ctrl to the Alt+FN you're probably accustomed to in
the console.
Welcome.

Hi.
You really shouldn't answer questions about products you
don't use.
I have no problems using the same speech device with Orca
and Speakup.
Unless you have changed it in your Fedora rpms, you leave
numlock off
for Orca review keys.

Rereading my post from last night, I feel compelled to
further clarify
one point below ...

My additional comment is that it is certainly possible,
currently, to
use the same TTS device with both Speakup and Orca, provided
that you
remove the speech driver before switching between the gui
and text
consoles. Yes, it's annoying and cumbersome, but I do find
it works.
It's what I do when traveling with my Thinkpad where there
is no serial
port and consequently no opportunity to run Speakup with a
hardware
speech device.
Clearly, this is a suboptimal procedure and cannot be called
a
"solution." We need a driver resolution whereby
Orca can support
Speakup's device drivers in some appropriate manner. This
has been
discussed on this list previously, and contacts have been
made between
Orca developers and Kirk Reiser. However, I don't believe
things have
gotten very far--possibly because Kirk (and Orca developers)
have too
many competing priorities. I believe the we, as a community,
are looking
for someone conversant with kernel driver development to
work on the
solution.

Kenny, What do you know about what I use and don't use? When
have we
ever met?

Didn't I say that? I believe I did.
If you have issues with something I said, please simply
respond to that and we can take things from there. I have no
interest in trading personal attacks either on, or off list.

| Orca Using speackup and orca
simultaniously (was: New to the list) |

Speakup.
The probelm here is OSS, and its inability to do software
mixing
easily. As long as you are using a single program that
insists on using OSS
and does not work with the alsa-OSS compatibility wrapper
(aoos),
there will be problems with audio device contention.
In the context of orca and speakup, the culprit is probably
festival
and the way it is used by gnome-speech. Speakup uses
speech-dispatcher which
supports alsa natively. Unfortunately, I did not get
festival to work
with the aoos wrapper program under Edgy, so it is limited
to OSS when
it is used for audio playback. the version of festival I
tried from Edgy is rather ancient, so current festival
versions might
be different in this respect, i.e. either support alsa
natively or at
least work with aoss. For the moment, a partial solution
might be to
use festival through speech-dispatcher instead of
gnome-speech, but I
have not tried this myself.
Another solution altogether is to use a sound card that
supports
multiple channels in hardware. this is probably not a viable
option
for most people, especially notebook users.
Best regards, Lukas
