| Orca Document reading function only
works partially |
  Germany |
2007-03-14 08:59:27 |
Hello all,
in the revision 2171 from the Orca trunk, the reading
function doesn't
work propperly:
In Evolution it simply doesn't work at all, no matter which
synth I use
(Festival, Speech-Dispatcher or Gnome speech driver).
In text documents only Festival works correct, it reads the
whole
document. Gnome speech reads a paragraph, while
Speech-Dispatcher only
reads a line.
I didn't test it in OO documents, but I guess it's the
same.
In earlier versions the function works propperly; I use the
Gnome speech
driver as speech output.
Regards
Hermann

I'm going to sound like a broken record but...
The list of changes made to Orca since it was branched for
GNOME 2.18
are listed in the ChangeLog. One (set) of them was a major
refactor. It's
possible this has had an adverse affect.
Would it be possible for you to turn debugging on in Orca
and send us
the debug.out created when you retry this?

Hello Rich,
I tested further, and found out, that in version 2.18 E-Mail
gets read,
but in text files it's the same. Maybe blank lines cause
this?
Furthermore with 2.18 the reading of OO-documents is OK, but
the
document I've tested contains no blank lines (the welcome
document in
the Examples folder of my home dir).
I'll recompile 2.19 and then test again, could result in a
larger file.
Regards
Hermann

Hello Rich,
as an attachment I send the debug file.
I tested e-mail reading, reading a text file containing
blank lines between
paragraphs, and reading an OO document without blank lines -
BTW. the
latter works correctly.

Hermann

Yesterday I wrote in reply to email from Hermann:

fixed.
The problem turned out to be that eSpeak didn't like to
utter
things that just contained white space, so the "say
all" was stopping
when you got to the first "blank" line. No
problems with the other
speech engines we tried (Cepstral Swift, Fonix DECTalk,
Festival).
Will added a workaround in Orca for this (thanks!) and has
checked
it into Orca SVN trunk/HEAD.

Hello Will and Rich,
unfortunately the fix only works partially:
When I start reading on a blank line, nothing is spoken.
To stay with the text file I'v posted yesterday: It contains
a line of
dashes "-", that's also a show stopper. When the
speech encounters it,
it stops.
In all other cases the fix works, e.g. starting on
"real" text, and when
paragraphs consist of whitespaces.
Sorry for that, but that's life :-(
Hermann

Thanks Hermann! I suspect this is a problem with eSpeak
itself -- it
doesn't seem to want to give us callbacks for text it wants
to throw on
the floor. I'm BCC'ing Gilles Casse, who did the original
work (thanks
Gilles) to get eSpeak hooked up to gnome-speech.
Gilles, do you have an idea of what might be happening
here?

I will be glad to track this issue soon, before the end of
this week.
Yes, this issue can be reproduced easily. Good or not very
good feature
according to the point of view...
