Python 2.4 is available in Debian unstable and also in
Debian testing.
The package python is only a dependency package
corresponding to the
default version. You need to install the package python2.4
instead of
it.

This package is a dependency package, which depends on
Debian's
default Python version (currently v2.3).

It's also possible to install multiple Python versions on
the same
system. /usr/bin/python is just a symlink pointing to the
system's
default interpreter.
