I might be able to help. I ran into that same problem.
Unfortunately,
being new I didn't think anyone else would run into it so I
didn't write
down what fixed it. However, Ubuntu is missing a few
different C
packages by default. You may be missing one of the compiler
packages
needed. Just the single gcc 4.0 package isn't enough I
don't think. I
found there were a few similar but different packages like
cpp as well
that might also be needed. Perhaps someone with more
experience can
figure out which package you're missing. But I also was
able to
configure and make but then it wouldn't make install for me
with that
same error. As a side note, I've found Ubuntu 6 to be more
stable and
versatile and work better with Orca than 5 if that's an
option for you.

Hi,
Thank you for the tip. I have downloaded the new ubuntu
6.06 and it
didn't work with my laptop. It says to have more drivers,
but all I
get is a white screen so it doesn't work with my laptop. I
have since
considered formatting Fedora core 5, as this works on all my
machines.

The easiest way to download all the most used compilation
packages is to
install the build-essential package.

As for .2.4 not being in Ubuntu, I submitted an upstream
version freeze
for it, which hwas approved, however it appears nobody has
uploaded it,
and Dapper is only a matter of a week or so away from
release.

I will see what I can do, but don't think it can be
uploaded at this
late stage. I not, I will make Ubuntu/Debian Sid packages
available for
whoever would like them.
