Hi,
I have orca 2.21, espeak 1.31, speech-dispatcher 0.6.6 and
ubuntu 7.10.
1. When I select speech-dispatcher backend (speech system
combo box), some
ponctuation signs are talked in a different way.
For example: slash is stroke; backslash is backstroke;
instead of saying
left parenthesis it says lparenthesis or something like
that.
If I use Speech Dispatcher Gnome Speech driver, this
"problem" doesn't
happen.
How can I solve this?
2. In speech-dispatcher backend, there are some pauses
between speech which
I'd like to remove. For example, in gnome-terminal's prompt
it says:
user'sname <a short pause> <a short pause>
desktop $.
How can I solve this?
Thanks
Best regards
Sérgio Neves

These are the names of the punctuation characters which are
in eSpeak.
"l-bracket" is changed to "left-bracket"
in the next version (1.32)
which I expect to be released in a few days.
You want to change "stroke" and
"backstroke" to "slash" and
"backslash"? That sounds a bit violent.
The "American" voice usually says
"slash" and the "British" voice says
"stroke". But when you are using the "speak
punctuation" mode, they
both say "stroke". This is an error, which I'll
fix for version 1.32.
It's possible to change it if you want.
1. Download the espeak-1.31-source.zip from
http://espeak.sourcefo
rge.net/
2. Get the directory "dictsource" from that
archive.
3. Edit the file "en_list" in the
"dictsource" directory.
Delete the following two lines in the "Character
names" section near
the start of the file.
_/ stroUk
_\ bakstroUk
Without these lines, then the (correct) pronunciations which
given at
the end of the en_rules file will be used.
4. Then, using the command-line, inside the
"dictsource" directory, do:
sudo espeak --compile=en

| GPodder and looking for an accessible
calendar. |

|
2008-02-29 18:29:09 |
With some looking around again tonight, I found gpodder. It
may be
already in your list of accessible applications however I
tripped across
it while looking for a calendar earlier. Ok. I admit, I
actually got
side tracked and ended up looking for an RSS reader.
I'm looking for two applications.
1. An accessible calendar. Doesn't have to be too
complicated. As long
as I can keep track of my to do list every day I'll be happy
enough. When
I was using Windows in work, I relied on the tasks in lotus
notes for
this. I haven't looked at Evolution for this functionality
yet. It may
provide it. I don't really like Evolution though. It seems
to be a bit
buggy with Orca and sometimes when accessing the groupwise
protocol.
2. An RSS reader. This is useful for so many things.
Firefox should
probably have one but I'm not having any luck getting access
to it's plug
ins feature for some reason. In Windows, I use to use a
third party rss
reader. I think the address to it was www.rssreader.org.
GPodder by the way is a podcast downloader. With some
looking around, it
looks like Orca works well with it.
Very impressive.

Hi,
If you are looking for a really simple calendar program,
there is a calendar
utility that comes with most versions of Linux. In Ubuntu,
it is
/usr/bin/calendar. I've been using it for many years, and it
suits my
needs--I don't need reminders fifteen minutes before an
event. I have a
cron job run calendar every morning at 4:00 and I receive an
email of my
events for the day and the following day. For more
information, man
calendar.
Hope this helps,
dave

There's an American voice in Espeak? What is it called?
The only ones I
could find seemed to be mbrola voices, which I thought
required a
closed-source binary to work.

"en-r".
It's an attempt, but it doesn't sound much likeAmerican,
which is
why I don't call it "en-us".
Try the latest version at:
http://espeak.s
f.net/test/latest.html
and tell me what needs to be changed to improve it

Hi,
Thanks for this answer.
I'd like to ask you one more thing, I think it's related to
espeak's
dictionary.
For example: Sometimes, I don't want espeak to say the words
"roman six"
when I write "vi". I prefer to control this
pronunciation through a screen
reader like orca, where I can introduce the words I want.
Is it possible to disable some words on the dictionary, or
disable this
dictionary completely, or what I'm saying doesn't make
sense?
Thanks for the good work
Best regards

What happens if you setup something in Orca's pronunciation
dictionary to replace the string "vi" with
something like "vee eye"?
You can add strings to the pronunciation dictionary via the
Pronunciation tab in Orca Preferences.

How to upgrade espeak to the latest version? I know ubuntu
has packages
for version 1.29. There were some changes in espeak api in
version 1.30
I think. Is speech-dispather able to handle this without a
change?
Thanks
