Thread: OT, slow IP connection

OT, slow IP connection
country flaguser name
United States
2008-03-07 17:13:46
Hi All,
I am running an update, and the connection is painfully
slow, in my Ubuntu
7.10.
I read on the web that it is the TCP-stack trying IPv6, when
there is no IP6
connection available.
Question,
Will my update change this?
Thanks.
Glenn

It is more likely to be the choice of Ubuntu package
server.

The default are the US servers, so if you dont live in the
US, you most
likely wish to modify your /etc/apt/sources.list to reflect
this.

for example I live in the UK, and the first line of my
/etc/apt/sources.list reads as follows:
deb http://gb.archiv
e.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty main restricted

note the gb after the http://
yours would probably be http://us

if you still wish to disable IPV6 then follow these steps:

1. sudo nano -w /etc/modprobe.d/aliases (or your preferred
text editor)
2. Find the line: alias net-pf-10 ipv6
3. Edit this to: alias net-pf-10 off
4. Save the file and reboot

Hope this helps

If it is going really slow downloading, then doing ctrl+c
will kill the
downloads, then you can try the suggestions, and when you
start the
update again it will continue where it left off.
Do not kill it if it is unpacking and replacing packages
though.

Forgot to mension that you need to do:
sudo apt-get update
after you modify your sources.list.

If this has anything to do with IPv6, it's likely that your
router is
trying to act as a DNS proxy and doing a bad job of it. If
that's the
case, first, see if the manufacturer of the device has
released updated
firmware. If they haven't, and if there's a dumpster behind
your
building, give it a contribution. Once you have a real
router, which
should solve your problem right away, you might consider
getting an IPv6
connection anyway. You can go to http://tunnelbroker.net/. However, you
will want to use something like edbrowse to sign up. Please
don't use
ff3. Message to follow.

           HTH.

The same problem is in Polish. Speech-dispatcher sends:
<say-as
interpret-as="tts:key">space</say-as>
to eSpeak.

My test:

spd-say -e
!-!CHAR space - produces correct Polish name [[spatsja]]
!-!KEY space - produces incorrect name [[spatse]]

I added the line:

_#32 spatsja

into pl_list, but it's recognized only as character name,
not a key.
Does eSpeak recognize interpret-as="tts:key"
attribute? If it does,
there must be the way to put translations of key names into
xx_list file
(the "space" is very good example, in Polish it
should be pronounced as
"spatsja" when speaking key name, but treated as
English word in plain
text).

By design IPv6 reverts to IPv4 when no IPv6 connection is
available. It
will not have any impact on the throughput of your
connection. If your
other net connections are performing more or less as
expected, the
culpirt is likely an overloaded, or otherwise encumbered
server at the
other end. The usual remedy is to force the use of a
different server,
but I cannot advise how that's done with apt.

PS: IPv6 is the bomb, but I'd be surprised if you have it,
because one
usually has to intentionally jump through hoops to get it.
What makes
you think you're making an IPv6 connection? What happens
when you do
something like:

ping6 cnn.com

from a terminal?

Yes, but the special names for Space and Tab (_#32 and _#9)
were only
used for "tts:char". I have now changed eSpeak to
use them for
"tts:key" also.

Try eSpeak version 1.35.01 at:
http://espeak.s
f.net/test/latest.html

Also, please try foreign accented letters are spoken OK, eg
"â". It
should be able to speak the names of all the alphabetic
characters up
to Unicode U+17F, but perhaps I use the wrong names for the
accent-names.

If anyone has any corrections, please send them to me now.
I hope that the version of eSpeak which is ready by tomorrow
(Sunday)
evening will be used for Ubuntu Hardy.

Nice idea, but speech-dispatcher sends string
"space" as key name, not
#32 character, so it still doesn't work

Works a little strange. I provided these characters spelling
in pl_list
(in fact only from ISO-2 range at this time), and now the
"â" is spoken
properly when reading line, but not in character-reading
mode. Is it
possible to get back my "daSEk" instead of
"circumflex"? ;)

I think you won't be able to include new version of Polish
(pl_rules and
pl_list) files if I'll send it tomorrow? I planned to finish
it in next
week :(

Not CNN. Like all of the other big players, they're doing
their best to
ignore IPv6. Try: www.isc.org, or www.octothorp.org. The
first is better
because they're directly connected.

Hi Attila:

If you feel comfortable editing code, try adding a
debug.println line to
src/orca/gnomespeechfactory.py around line 103:

     def say(self, text):
         if isinstance(text, unicode):
             text = text.encode("UTF-8")
         debug.println(debug.LEVEL_INFO,
"FOO:"+text)
         return self.gnome_speaker.say(text)

Then, uncomment these lines in ~/.orca/user-settings.py
(they are around
lines 17 for the first and 32 for the second):

orca.debug.debugLevel = orca.debug.LEVEL_INFO
orca.debug.debugFile = open('debug.out', 'w', 0)

Then rebuild/install orca and run it from a command line
prompt,
conducting a very short test to reproduce the problem.
Then, send us
the debug.out file and we can take a look.

Thanks!

Will
