The keyboard is in  Unicode (UTF-8) mode. (translated from

I have since upgraded that Debian Lenny to sid (the
"unstable" branch), 
and am now on eSpeak 1.36-02 and  Speech-Dispatcher
0.6.6-02. Same result.
