I thought I'd give Evolution a try this evening and the
configuration
and setup went fine and seemed plenty accessible but after
setting up
my IMAP mail account, it locks up all the time whenever I
try and
restart Evolution and login. Sometimes I get the prompt for
my IMAP
password with speech and most other times, I hear a ding
that
indicates the prompt for password but no speech. I assume
Orca has
crashed or something. I can't alt tab to any other apps or
at least I
don't get any speech to tell me if doing so or not. I can
attempt to
log off by pressing alt-f1 and choosing System menu and
logout; I hear
the noises that imply loging off but then it hangs and I
really never
get logged off. The only keystroke that works for me is
control-alt-backslash. That seems to be the only thing I
can do after
that. Basically right now, I cannot use Evolution at all
without
losing speech all the time. Does Evolution not work well
with IMAP
folders? If it doesn't, then I will stick to mutt. At least
that one
works, more than I can presently say for Evolution.

Any ideas as to what is going on around here with this?

I want to add that the major stability problems with
Evolution and
Orca seem to be better if I stick to local spool and
folders. Ass soon
as I get prompted for passwords or anything, that's when it
completely
falls appart. I lose speech and all. I noticed that
sometimes I can
do the alt-f2 and restart Orca but other times that doesn't
do it
either. I use IMAP for all my e-mail needs so if IMAP
doesn't work
right with Evolution, then I'll have to stay with mutt.
From what
I've seen otherwise, I like Evolution and want to give it go
where
possible. I wonder how good the calendar works from an
a11y
stand-point.

Evolution is fairly accessible, so I don't know what's wrong
in your case. It can handle IMAP folders - have tried it
myself.
Did you succeed in setting up your mail accounts? Did you
choose an external SMTP server, you write something about
local spool folders. I think Evolution can handle this
setting too, but I'm not familiar with this. You should be
prompted only once for your password, provided you set your
account up that way.
When Evolution starts correctly, you should adjust some
settings in the view menu, but that's the next point.

Hello,
evolution can be used, but sometimes it seems to be possible
to mess it
up quite a bit and make it unresponsive.

I previously had a problem on my system where evolution may
lock up (to
the point that when pressing alt-f4 a message about
evolution is not
responding and whether I wish to wait or force a exit would
appear) on
a regular basis when I tried to write an email (either by
creating a new
message or replying). I never tracked down this problem, nor
did it show
itself on my laptop, and it has gone since I upgraded to
gnome 2.22.0.
Other than that, when it works it seems to work well. I use
it with imap
and have no problems, although if you are OK using mutt it
may be
better.

Yeah, when things get that way, what is the best way to
clear out all
local footprints of Evolution and start over again? I
deleted the
.evolution folder from my home directory and the evolution
folder from .gconf directory but there
was still something left because it still remembered my
server
settings. Maybe if I could clear everything out, I could
try again.
I really hate losing speech that way though. The only other
thing I
can think of is maybe when accessing an IMAP folder for the
first time
it takes a long time and maybe during that time it locks
everything
else out. But I could alt tab sometimes to other apps,
still with no
speech and attempt restarts of Orca and the like. That's
why I
concluded that some how this incident was crashing Orca.

From the time when I was trying to get their startup
wizard
accessible, and had to keep going back to a "new
user" state,
I made the following note:

* Close Evolution first, then run:

  % gconftool-2 --recursive-unset
"/apps/evolution"

This will clear all Evolution settings.

Hope that helps.

Why are there quotes around the path spec? The
shell's only going to
eat them.

Force of habit.
