Olmtrader,
    If rebooting doesn't solve the problem, the following
might prove 
helpful.

    OE's spell checker only works when there is another app
installed that 
contains the functionality OE needs to check your spelling. 
In other words, 
installing an app like Microsoft Word will enable OE's spell
checker. 
Without one of these apps, thespell check icon will be
grayed out and it 
won't work.  I have no idea if Thunderbird works the same
way, but it might 
lead you in the right direction for the answer you seek.
