Cris,
They are not quite the same thing. The Eject option in
the right click
context menu is primarily used for memory cards like the one
for your
camera. USB (thumb) drives and external hard drives require
you to first
unmount them using the icon in the Notification (formerly
System Tray) area.
There IS a setting for each mountable device that will
tell Windows to
allow it to be unplugged without first unmounting it. Click
on Start and
then Run. Type in the following and then press the Enter
key.
devmgmt.msc
Once Device Manager is running, click on the plus sign
next to the
heading for the device in question. In most cases including
USB drives, the
heading is "Disk Drives". Locate the listing for
the device and double
click on it. When the Property sheet for that device opens,
click on the
tab called 'Policies' and make sure that "Optimize for
quick removal" is the
active option. Click on OK until all property windows are
closed and after
your next reboot you will no longer have to unmount that
particular drive
before you remove it. Please note that the drive may feel a
little slower
than before. Windows is no longer caching the data before
writing it to the
drive and you may find yourself waiting longer for it to
finish before it
moves onto the next command.
Peace,
GMan

... I think that is the same thing as safely remove
hardware. My external
hard drive told me to choose safely remove hardware also.
Our power went out
once, and I have had trouble booting it ever since. grrr!!
so - it is best
to do that!!
