Hi Group, here's a good one: a friend bought new speakers
for his PC and set
the subwoofer on top of the monitor just for a minute (after
reading
instructions not to!). The colors along the top of the
monitor all bled
together into various hues, then after a reboot they (the
"hues") kind of
piled up in the upper left corner on the wallpaper. When
you go into OE the
top border is all kind of gray. It's not HORRIBLE, but is
there any way to
fix this other than a new monitor? ~Glo

Hi Glo,
I think shuting down the computer and unpluging the
monitor for a while shoud clear the problem.

Glo, if your rebooting without turning off the monitor have
them turn off
the monitor and turn it back on. I am assuming it is a
tube type monitor.
If this does not work a tv repair can degauss it with an
electromagnet.
Most tube monitors and tv have it built in to do it
automatically.
Hope this helps,

Glo,
Tell your friend to look through the monitor's menu for
an item called
"Degauss". Degaussing attempts to remove unwanted
magnetic buildup from the
tiny wires and screen (called a 'mask' or 'aperture grill')
that sit just
behind the phosphorus on the inside of the front of the
screen. Of course,
what your friend did was magnetize them. ;O}
If the monitor in question does not have this feature,
turn it off and
unplug it for at least 24 hours to allow the capacitors
inside to fully
discharge. Then, turning it back on may naturally degauss
it. If that
still doesn't do the trick, most puter shops have a device
that they use to
manually degauss them. I have no idea how much they would
charge for this
service, however.
Peace,
GMan

Degauss it. Go to the screen setup, or there may be a
separate button for it.

Not to worry, shut it off and it will restore itself. Scared
some kids when
they applied a magnet to a monitor at school - they did not
do that again.

Thanks for all the suggestions, this was the first we tried
and it worked!
I'll save them all however, in case I run into someone again
whose curiosity
gets the best of him <G>. Cowboy Bob suggested
"Degauss it. Go to the
screen setup" but I couldn't find it, where would that
be? I'm looking on
my own computer but just realized an LCD monitor wouldn't
have gausses
(gausi?), --would it? ~Glo

Glo,
No, an LCD doesn't use the thin wires, so there's
nothing to degauss.
:O)
