Hi Becky,
As far as I can remember, I'm the only one Neil called
'G'. If it's me
he was talking about, it sure does make me smile to hear he
felt that way.
As I mentioned, I felt a lot of respect for him, as well.
About the PC, you are now the official owner of
everything having to do
with the computer, with the exception of any prose or other
types of
manuscripts he may have written. Even without a specific
Copywrite
statement, his writings are covered under the law and no one
else can lay
claim to them. Of course, I seriously doubt you had
anything like that in
mind, but I had to bring it up to avoid any confusion. You
should take the
time to go through everything he has on the machine,
especially txt, doc and
rtf files. If he was like most folks, you're likely to
discover that he
wrote down all of the info he needed to reinstall most of
his software as
well as usernames & passwords to places that he
frequented online. Without
meaning to place any kind of hardship on you, you're
probably the only one
with the means to let his online friends know that he has
passed. I have no
idea if he used any instant messenger programs, but if he
did, those would
most likely contain the people he was closest to. The same
can be said
about the computer's Address Book, although he may have it
set to record the
addy of anyone he wrote to. That would result in a lot of
addresses that he
only used once or twice. Unfortunately, we have no way of
knowing for sure
who is who in there.
The software he purchased or downloaded, and the serial
numbers that
allow them to work, are also now yours. If you can, I
strongly suggest you
go through each installed program looking for these
registration/serial
numbers and write them down for any future reinstalls. Some
apps also allow
you to upgrade to a newer version for free if you have a
valid registration
number. That's one more reason to have these written
somewhere. For most
apps, you can find this info by going to Help > About in
the menu list near
the top of the program. If you run into any trouble or have
any questions
at all about this, by all means give us a yell. That's part
of why we're
here. :O)
I also used to moderate a Stationery group, but not the
one where Neil
was involved. Chances are good that some of the images on
your computer
were created by the folks who created stats in that group.
Unless Neil was
fond of working a camera, the rest of them are probably
copywrited images he
and the other members of the stat group found online
&/or scanned into their
computers to share with the rest of the group members.
There is no problem
with you keeping ANY of these, as long as you don't use them
for anything
commercial (something that makes you money) or post them
publicly (as on a
personal website or even a forum). In a nutshell, keep them
to yourself and
you're as safe as you can be. If someone else asks for a
copy, you CAN send
it to them. The restrictions above are then transferred
oevr to them as
well. If, for example, they post it on their website, you
are NOT
responsible. Wow, I sound like a darn lawyer now. lol
Finally, if the computer is running well (and I saw the
post where you
said it is), there's probably no reason at all for you to
consider following
through with Neil's quest. He wanted to upgrade the
computer to allow him
to do more of the things he enjoyed doing and possibly to do
them faster.
If the computer suits your needs fine just the way it is,
there's no need to
fix what isn't broken. If/when the time comes when you find
the PC can no
longer do what you need or want it to do, we can then help
you figure out
the best way to correct it. In the meantime, you're more
than welcome to
stick around, ask ANY questions you might have (see my sig
to clarify), take
notes and learn from the wonderful people we have here. Not
everyone here
works as a computer tech, but you'll find we're all happy to
provide insight
into these infernal contraptions. :O)
Peace,
GMan
