I think you are right, after looking at the pictures I
better take it to a shop. It will do fine for now, my
husband looked inside the case tonight and it was pretty
clean so he must have done that. He had a CD from Dell
(restore disk W-ME) and a upgrade disk to W-XP. Yes, I have
all his software and passwords because he left them on here,
I of course would not use anything personal but would like
to keep his pictures, I've never seen so many pretty
pictures in my life.
It has XP on it now and is running pretty good.

  Becky,
This snippet from a post Neil sent recently (look below my
reply)
explains why he wanted a new motherboard (I tend to call
them mainboards,
but it means the same thing) and some help hooking up the
USB ports in the
front of the computer tower. These ports are small, thin
rectangular slots
that accept USB keys (memory cards built into a case about
the size of a
standard Bic cigarrette lighter) and cables from USB devices
such as a
mouse, keyboard, camera, etc.. I sent him a bunch of advice
for hooking up
the USB while Sir Troth, one of the moderators here, gave
him advice on
dealing with the mainboard issue. He even sent in a link to
his website
where it shows the computer you're on right now and two
images of the
mainboard that's in it. I just checked and the link is still
working, so go
take a look. It'll help prepare you for when you open up the
case and peek
inside for the first time. :O)

You can see some of the dust that normally accumulates
inside the beast.
Troth gave him some suggestions for cleaning it, but we
don't know if he
followed through on that or not. Later in that thread, he
let us know he
only had an OEM Restore CD (a compact disk containing a
restore routine that
essentially wipes the hard drive and Restores it to the way
it was when it
left the factory) and knew he would need to purchase a
Retail copy of
Windows XP in order to install it with a new non-Dell made
mainboard. As a
side note, an OEM Restore CD will sometimes not work on any
mainboard other
than one from the same maker as the OEM disk. Plus, the OEM
install CD
would put all of the Dell stuff back on there that he didn't
want. Did Neil
also give you all of his CDs and Floppies and such? If so,
look through
them and see if there are any CDs with the Microsoft logo on
it. If there
is, write back and tell me the rest of the title(s) for
them.

He also wanted advice on upgrading the power supply, CPU
(the main brain
of any computer), RAM, etc.. What I'm trying to let you know
is that he was
basically going to just use that case and a few of the parts
in it (like the
hard drive, CD drive, DVD drive & Floppy drive) and
build a new system
around them. That's significantly more than just replacing
the mainboard
which, by itself, means taking apart nearly the whole thing,
replacing the
board and then reinstalling everything you removed to get to
the mainboard.

Since you were able to join the group without any problem,
I'm sure you
have experience using PCs. Can you tell me what operating
system is
currently running on your system? I suspect it's Windows 98
or 98SE (Second
Edition), but would like confirmation before making any
further suggestions.

I do realize this may be a lot for you to take in, but bear
with us. We'll
get you and your system up to speed one semi-painless way or
another.
;O)

Peace,
GMan
