So can you tell me the advantages and disadvantages of the
external versus
the internal? I know nothing. Just thought the external
would be more
secure and not blow up at the same time the original
computer decided to go
south. Also easier to grab and run with it in case of fire
or tornado or
other disaster. Am I right about that?
Sandi
P.S. I have never opened the case on my computer and
probably never will
unless I need to clean out dust bunnies.

Hi Sandi,
I have all three types<G>
dual internal hard drives so I can backup my main
drive to my larger backup drive.

I also have my main hard drive on a removable drive racks,
I have another identical drive in another 'caddie' that
fits
in the removable drive bay that is a clone of the main
drive.

5 of my computers are fitted with these drive bays.
I have about 8 caddies with various drives fitted into
them.
I bought my 4 =3D 20 gig Maxtor drives all at the same time

to be sure they were identical.
I did the same with 2 =3D Maxtor 80 gig drives.

Recently I swapped one of the 80 gig drives into one of
my older computers and put a Maxtor 300gig into the case.

The removable clone is kept at my mom's and only
brought here for cloneing once a month.

The 3rd backup is a 300gig USB external drive with
clone d images of my 3 computers on it.
I try to back them up once a week.
The drive is unplugged and kept in my filing cabinet
when not being used.

I also have an older, 2years, Maxtor 120 gig USB drive
that is my 'in use' drive and moved to whatever computer
I need to move or saved data from.

I have a metal storage cabinet in my garage which is
6ft high 20" deep and 3ft wide full of computer
components
I have saved/replaced/removed from old computers.

Yes I have a plastic pocket protector, with several pens in
it.
and my glasses have tape on them <Very Big Grin>

When I went to the Microsoft Vista intro I got the official
MS shirt with NERD on the back.

Cheers

Well... advantage/disadvantage... nothing really major. They
really are the same beasts, just in different suits.
Internals usually cost less. And, are much tidier if they
fit in your tower. Some towers are either too small to
accept another drive, or are already filled to capacity. For
someone like me, all my systems are stacked inside with
multiple drives, so external is the only way to go.

Plus... externals can be removed and take from here to
there... SHOULD that be required.

Most externals have on/off switches, so you can keep them
off and only turn them on when you need them. If you don't
use the drive much, that feature alone can add years to the
drive.

And, finally... the externals make you look all techy when
your friends come over and see all the lights emanating from
the office from all those external drives.
