Ok,

Have moved it to the other room with different monitor,
keybord and mouse.
have tried a PCI video card and another AGP(the original was
AGP) still no
luck. Have plugged another hard drive in, no luck. Is there
a definite way
to know if the mobo is dead? If it has shorted out, is the
CPU likely dead
too?

Jo Ann,
This only seems like it's affecting your video signal,
right? If so, I
don't see the PS as a main culprit. Doesn't mean it's not,
but it's
unlikely. Unless the PS isn't rated high enough. To be
frank, I'm
concerned about the video card not having a screw when you
opened it up. If
you were only getting a partial connection with the port,
it's possible that
it could have shorted out something (and you probably know
what that
something would most likely be). Still, replacing other
parts is easier
than tearing the system down and rebuilding piece by piece.

Turn on the system and power is supplied to the
mainboard and everything
else that is directly connected to the PS. Optical drives
initialize, hard
drives spin up and fans begin to spin while the BIOS jumps
into action. The
BIOS reads the data in it's memory and starts testing the
items it's
supposed to have (in no particular order: mouse, keyboard,
system timer,
chipset, CPU, RAM, floppy drive and finally the hard
drives). At this
point, it turns over responsibility to the hard drive
designated for storing
the OS info in its Master Boot Record (MBR) and Windows
takes over from
there. Since it only gave you a single beep, we know that
the mainboard is
unaware of anything wrong. A single beep is the universal
BIOS signal that
no errors have been found. All other beep combinations must
be looked up
for that particular BIOS, since they are all different.

Reading that back to myself, it dawned on me that a
connected, but still
loose, keyboard or mouse cable could cause bootup problems.
Try reseating
ALL of the stuff connected to the back of the tower.

Peace,
GMan

Nothing short of replacing the mobo or trying this one in
another system.
And there's no way to tell if it's the mobo, the CPU or
both. Because of
the missing screw, I suspected the AGP slot, but you
destroyed that theory
by trying a PCI card. Still, you're getting that single
beep at the end of
the POST and that's killing me! The BIOS says everything is
working fine,
but the lack of monitor says otherwise. The problem SHOULD
be in the card,
cable or monitor.

I've tried my hardest to avoid it, but it looks like you
might be taking
apart the system. I suppose you could try replacing the PS
like you
suggested. Can't hurt, right?

Peace,
GMan
