Jo Ann,
Considering you've decided on the ASUS P5N-E SLI
mainboard,
http://wapurl.co.uk/?Y78
Q2TM
I now hesitate to recommend this particular OCZ memory.
http://wapurl.co.uk/?S3T
VSHX

While the memory is top notch by itself, several people
have reported
problems getting it to work with your board. I should point
out that there
are ALWAYS folks who have problems with any combination of
RAM & boards, but
this one has OCZ's attention. Please read the following two
pages for
clarification.

http://wapurl.co.uk/?OZS
3M9H
http://wapurl.co.uk/?IMM
STON

From what I've read at various sources, some people
don't experience
this problem at all while others do. If you're not afraid
to give it a go,
it's a killer combination for sure, once it's working.
According to the OCZ
forum mod, 1T should work up to DDR2-800 (which is what the
board supports),
above that, 2T is basically a must (and I suggest you
avoid). This means
the rating is basically on the cusp and really depends on
the individual
sticks you receive. Since the mainboard defaults this
timing to 1T, if
either one of the RAM modules just barely passed their QC
tests, it may give
you issues because the RAM will require the timing to be set
at 2T before
it'll boot. Of course, you can't adjust the timings unless
you can at least
get into the BIOS. This is why I said earlier that some
folks have gotten
around this by initially installing cheaper sticks just to
get into the BIOS
to make the necessary changes.

So, if you have access to a cheap stick of DDR2, this
will not be that
big of an issue to you. Otherwise, I have to suggest we
look elsewhere.

Peace,
GMan

JoAnn & Gman

Where are you located?

I have a couple of sticks of 512 DDR2 ram I am not using...
(I will have to
ask my other half to find them.) If I could loan them to you
to get your
machine going..and then you would have to send them back to
me.
This machine came with 1 GB of RAM which is two sticks of
512 mb matched.
This is the type that has to be matched.

I do not know if they will work to get you up and going.
They are either PC
2800 or PC 3200.

These may be too old for you..I do not know. They could be
the wrong type.
And..my other half has to find them.. lol! IF we did not
put them in his
machine already... tee hee...

Let me know if you are interested... and Gman..let me know
if they would
work.. and then I will ask my other half. No sense bringing
it up and
finding out you cannot use them.

Rose,
As long as they are DDR2 and have a lower rating than
DDR2-800, one of
them will do the trick because that's all it would take to
be able to boot
into the BIOS and set up the timings for the new RAM.
Matching wouldn't
matter for this purpose. :O)

As for location, I'm in Michigan, but that doesn't
matter either. I
won't be the one installing them. I'll just be helping with
instructions
and pom-poms.      ;O}

Gosh...do you ever sleep? You are a night owl like me...
tee hee!

I really was asking where JoAnn was..then.... because of the
ram info..I put
your name up there.
But nice to know where you are. I have a niece that lives
in Ann Arbor.
Her and her hubby both work at the university library.

Have a happy....
I am calling it a night. It is 1:30 am and I have to be at

early.
Will check to see if I have the available ram
hopefully...tomorrow.

Ok GMan,

I saw some of that too, but understood that they were
booting with one stick
of it, then adding the other. How much performance
difference will there be
if we drop to 667?

Jo Ann,
I'm not so sure it's the fault of the speed of the RAM.
I'm thinking
it's the manufacturing of the OCZ sticks that's responsible
here. OCZ has
always tried to be at or extremely near the top of the food
chain with their
RAM. To be #1, you absolutely have to push the limits of
whatever you're
doing. It looks like they may have pushed just a little too
much with this
model (unless you don't mind the challenge of doing whatever
it takes to
make them work, of course).

But therein the rub. Most of the folks who lay out the
kind of cash
that these things cost are seasoned high end system builders
who don't even
need a forum to explain how to work around these types of
issues.
Personally, I don't have that much experience building super
high-end
systems because the majority of my customers are typically
working stiffs
trying to make ends meet. So, when I buy top rated RAM (as
I do for my own
systems), I'm right there at the forums trying to separate
the facts from
the garbage, knowing full well that some of the reviews are
written by
people working for the competition and some others are
posted by people
building their first computer.

Having said all that, I think you would be doing
yourself and your new
system a serious disservice going with lesser rated RAM.
Unfortunately, my
time has been stretched a little thin lately and I haven't
had the time to
look up some other options for you. I hope to correct that
tonight as I am
actually in the mood for some good "forum fodder".
         lol

Peace,
GMan

-=PCTechTalk=- Re: Jo Ann's New system - Dept. of RAM
country flaguser name
United States

Good Morning, Jo Ann, (assumption? perhaps)

Ok, I just ran across an unbiased review of the board
(AnandTech) and it is,
in fact, a known problem with the board's tightly set
timings and not with
the RAM. This issue affects more than just this particular
board, too.
ASUS is currently working on an updated BIOS that corrects
the problem.
This basically means there's nothing wrong with the OCZ
we've been
discussing and, as I suspected, it comes down to the board
makers trying to
be the best performers and setting their timings too tight.

Alright, as a result of the above revelation, we've now got
to talk about
mainboard revisions. When a mobo maker releases a board, it
normally comes
with the first stable BIOS they designed for it already
installed. When
they update the BIOS, they make it available on the internet
for owners of
that board to download and flash. If they're still
manufacturing that
board, they drop the original BIOS and use the newer one
instead. To
differentiate between the older and newer boards, they use a
revision
number. Subsequent BIOS updates will coincide with higher
revision numbers
until they eventually stop producing that particular
mainboard. They may or
may not continue to produce newer BIOS updates once the
board is no longer
manufactured.

Having said all that, you're going to want to buy this board
with the new
BIOS already installed because there's no way for you to
flash the BIOS
without having installed the RAM already. It's one of those
catch-22s
unless you get the newest revision. Of course, this means
you'll have to
hold off on the board until it's available with this new
BIOS AND you'll
have to specifically ask for this revision, since stores
online & off will
still have some of the older stock they're trying to unload.
 This AnandTech
review I'm reading is dated Dec 22nd of 2006, so the new
revision may
already be available. I'll let you know what I find.

Peace,
GMan
