JoAnne,
I typically do not install any problems to my C: unless they
have to be
there. I do tend to let Norton live there. Seems it works
better there.
I have a drive letter I name Programs. In that drive, I
have categories...
such as
CD/DVD Burning Programs
Games
Graphics
Sound
Utilities
Video
Word Processing Related
There are more categories.
I also use these same categories when they are added to the

(Start) )Programs listing. Some programs do not let you
chose where they go
on the programs menu, but you can fix that by ...Right
clicking on the Start
button, and selecting Explore all users. Then you can drag
and drop the
menu items to where you want them and even create sub
categories. I do that
in my Games folder. I have sub folders.. On Computer and On
Line. It makes
it easier for me to find the game I want then.

The benefit of having a separate directory for Programs is
that when you do
exactly what you are doing.... wiping the C: or installing
an upgrade.
Yes, you still have to reinstall the programs, but your file
structure is
all in place. You know what programs were installed and
now, what you have
to reinstall. You can reinstall them right into the same
folders. (If you
have gotten updates to the programs, they too will have to
be reinstalled)

And, if you Start/Programs listing is already organized, you
can just put
the same info in the program when you are reinstalling. It
is easier to do
the same thing over and over..rather than re-create every
time. (Of
course..I do try to improve the system every now and again.
God forbid I
leave well enough alone!

Wiped it.The only way to go IMO. It's a large drive with
four partitions
and I wiped the C part. The only thing on the other sections
is music
and pictures. Would it be wise to put downloaded programs
somewhere
besides the C drive this time?

reinstalling Windows or did you go over the old install?

I had several running before, but nothing on this new
install except
Windows firewall is on. Avast does have a network shield,
P2P shield,
standard shield and a web shield. Guess I'll have to start
trying these.
But I've run Avast for a year now, and didn't have these
problems till
last week.

Thanks Rose,

Sounds like a good plan.

I do the same thing. I only have Windows on C and some small
files.
Everything else goes onto a different drive. For example, my
D drive
is labeled: TInstall - for Tricia Install, and E is AInstall
for my
daughter's (Allyson) installed programs. That way, if I have
to
reformat, I can just reformat C. Anything that is vitally
important,
is kept on a different hard drive all together. Tricia
