Have you considered a third party defragmenter - my opinion
of M$'s defragger is not well.
Personally I use Perfect Disk.
Diskeeper has a free version called Diskkeeper lite the auto
functions have been "turned off" they have a
decent product (again my opine).
JKdefrag has a free defrag too however (in my opinion) it is
not any better than M$'s but it may assist you in your
problem.
You might wanna check you HDD for errors as well.

I did it in safe mode and had the same problem...I used to

and scan went thru fine.. The hard drive is 7/8 empty...has
a LONG way to go
to be even 1/4 full. I don't know what else to turn off?

how much free space is on your hard drive? if you don't have

stop. Also helps to defrag in safe mode while nothing is

Why is it that a computer refuses to go beyond a certin
point in defrag??
Mine stops at 27% and says not all the computer files could
be defraged.
Never had that happen before..I turned off everything that
could use up
something but I still get this notice. It needs to defrag
but won't. spt.

WinXP's defragmenter is actually a special version of
Diskkeeper. All of
the power has been removed for your convenience. ;O}
The reason it doesn't defrag everything is because some of
those files are
in use while the program is running. It can not defrag a
file that's
currently in operation. If you absolutely must have those
files defragged,
you'll either have to upgrade to a more robust defragmenter
app or create a
dual-boot system and defrag it from the other operating
system.

I do believe Linux is free but not sure. I am one of those
people who expects my OS to be error free (yeah right but
then I
woke up). Anyhoo, I notice a lot of my programs use things
inherent to Microsoft as part of their programs.
Won't having Linux prevent them from operating correctly?

Judith,
Linux is indeed a free operating system (open source
kernel and open
source community constantly working to improve the resulting
OS and apps).
Many Linux users purchase packages (called distributions or
distro's) that
include a lot of additional programs and, importantly, free
tech support to
help them get it up, running and beyond. You're right in
that the Microsoft
based products won't work on Linux, but that's primarily a
good thing. All
Linux distros come with applications and the ability to
download much, much
more directly from within the OS. I know of a few folks who
use Windows,
MacOS AND Linux and nearly every one of them claims that
Linux has the
better apps. The most probable reason would be that so many
programmers are
constantly working on the coding and security that it has
become very tight
(not bloated like MS) and secure (many Linux coders also
work as white hat
hackers that look for security holes in other makers
products).
The biggest knock on Linux is that the gaming community
hasn't embraced
it yet. There are very few major titles for Linux. As a
result, some folks
just dual-boot between WinXP and Linux to get the best of
both worlds.
And just so you know, I'm not trying to talk anyone into
trying it. I'm
simply trying to answer your question as completely as I
can. :O)
Peace,
GMan
