I know there is someone in the group who uses Eudora. I have
a
question regarding the attachments in the 'attach' folder.
Why does Eudora rename identical files with a 1, 2, 3 etc.?
For
example, say I send a picture, named 'PC' to someone. The
original
will be in my attach folder. If they should resend me the
same
picture, Eudora will rename it to PC1. If another person
sends the
same picture to me, Eudora will rename it to PC2. And so on,
ad nauseam.
Is there a way to make it stop doing this? If it's
identical, why
can't it just overwrite the existing file?
Thanks Tricia

Because only the name may be identical. How would you feel
if someone sent
you a wonderful picture and it had the same name as one of
yours. It would
overwrite yours because it's the same name. But now your
picture is lost
forever. It isn't comparing pictures, only names and it
renames them to
prevent accidental loss since people have a tendency not to
be very
original with names. You send your mother a picture
entitled Me.jpg. She
takes a picture of herself and sends it to you and she names
it....Me.
jpg. If it didn't rename them, your picture would be lost
as it would
overwrite it with hers. I hope that explains it for you.

Yes, I understand the concept. It's just that I wish there
was a
better way to handle attachments. Do you use Eudora? This is
one of
the features that eludes me. The other feature is the filter
limitations.

Yes I do use Eudora. I've always liked it but I never have
used the
filters much. I clean out my attachments folder once a week
anyway and
move anything I want to keep into other folders. It's easy
enough to do
and I'd rather have duplicates of something than find out I
hadn't moved
something and it was overwritten. With Eudora going to open
source I don't
know if I'll stay with it or move to something else,
probably
Thunderbird. I'd rather keep Eudora as I've always liked
it. Have you
checked the Eudora website for info regarding filters? I've
usually found
answers to anything I needed on the site. If you have a
paid version of
Eudora, you are entitled to tech support through April I
believe.

I clean mine out every couple of days. I get a lot of mail
from some
of the groups that I am in and that folder gets very
crammed. I've
been using it for a long time too. I have always liked it. I
contacted their tech support and even posted to the forums,
but I
haven't gotten a response yet. Thanks for responding.

You do realize that it's Windows that renames all files, not
Eudora don't
you?
