Have you considered a third party defragmenter - my opinion
of M$'s
defragger is not well.
Personally I use Perfect Disk.

Diskeeper has a free version called Diskkeeper lite the auto
functions have
been "turned off" they have a decent product
(again my opine).

JKdefrag has a free defrag too however (in my opinion) it is
not any better
than M$'s but it may assist you in your problem.

You might wanna check you HDD for errors as well.

I did it in safe mode and had the same problem...I used to
have the same
problem when I scanned disk but I turned off everything
running in systray
and scan went thru fine.. The hard drive is 7/8 empty...has
a LONG way to go
to be even 1/4 full. I don't know what else to turn off?

how much free space is on your hard drive? if you don't have
enough, it can
stop. Also helps to defrag in safe mode while nothing is
running in the
background.

Why is it that a computer refuses to go beyond a certin
point in defrag??
Mine stops at 27% and says not all the computer files could
be defraged.
Never had that happen before..I turned off everything that
could use up
something but I still get this notice. It needs to defrag
but won't. spt.
