Fan is not important, though always a good thing. Power
supply, in MY opinion, is a must. Apparently, not all the
manufacturers think like I do.

I have several hard drives in a AMS Venus DS3 external
case:

This one is actually is for a SATA drive, and connects
externally to your computer via USB or SATA. That is the
reason for the higher cost. The ones I use look exactly the
same, except they're for IDE drives, and they connect to my
computer via USB only. These cost me $35 each from Newegg. I
haven't bought one for awhile there, so not sure if they
still carry it or what. Didn't see it there now.

And... these have a fan, external power supply, and the case
is aluminum for keeping the darn thing cool.

Appreciate the reply Troth, I wasn't looking to put much
into a case as it
would seldom be used but you get what you pay for. My Dell
is limited to a
400 watt ps, so maybe I need a couple to put a few drives
in, you're
correct, power supply is a must. Fan, not so much since
limited use...
