Bob, and all,

I hade Systemworks on my computer for years... (new versions
each year..free
after rebates) and have been happy with it. Once in a
while, a kink showed
up, but with 'some' tenacity, it was resolved.
I could not find a Systemworks 2007 this year on Black
Friday when I usually
bought it and kept it till spring when my AV ran out. They
did not release
Systemworks 2007 until after Vista was released..or maybe in
sync with it,
but there was notice on the Symantec site that Systemworks
was not
comparable.

So, I purchased Norton Internet Security (NICS) and
installed it. I did
not remove Systemworks 2007 as I 'assumed' Norton would take
care of it or
tell me what to do. I know my uninstalling it would not
remove everything
from the registry and hoped the NIS installation would take
care of
everything. Perhaps that was too naive on my part.... but
it.worked.

It disabled the AV in my Systemworks, but I still have my
One Button Checkup
and all the Utilities.

Also, you may have noticed..that NIS now has add-ons. When
I did an
update, I saw the add-ons and included them. The Norton
Confidential was
not originally included in NIS, but an add-on Update
included it.

So, I too still have the Systemworks tools I did not want to
lose.

I am not sure what Norton is doing... but they are driving
me crazy with
their products. They are changing around features/programs
and make it
difficult to purchase just what you want.

I got Ghost 10 and Partition Magic 8 with the NIS as a
package. I paid $70
in the store and got $70 back.... (a $20 Visa Gift card
& a $50 Visa card
and faster than previous Norton rebates too! The other day
I was in the
store..looking at the software I could get free (after
rebates) when you
bought income tax (UGH!) software. One of the programs was
Norton's Save &
Restore. (Then I found out..at the register that the offer
ended the day
before..so I paid $10 for it with a $40 rebate. It sells
for $50 on the
Symantec site.
The store clerk told me this program was going to replace
Ghost.

Here is a quote from the SYMANTEC site:
Key Features
a.. Offers all the power of Symantec's Norton Ghost
technology, plus
faster ways to back up files
b.. Backs up everything on your computer-digital photos,
family videos,
key financial records, essential computer system files, and
other data-in
one easy step
c.. Recovers your system and data even when you can't
restart your
operating system
d.. Makes incremental backups to maximize space and save
time
e.. Makes backups on the fly, without restarting your
system
f.. Backs up to almost any media, including CDR/RW and
DVD+-R/RW drives,
USB and FireWire® (IEEE 1394) external storage devices, and
Iomega® Zip® and
Jaz® drives
g.. One-step setup wizard automatically creates an initial
backup schedule
based on your computer's storage devices and system
settings
h.. Automatically monitors and optimizes backup disk
space
i.. Triggers backups on key events, such as new program
installations or
user logins
j.. Encrypts backups to help keep them secure
New Features (compared to Norton Ghost 10.0)
a..
a.. File and folder back up lets you choose specific files
and folders to
save, rather than an entire drive
b.. Protects all files of a certain type (such as photos
or documents) by
finding and backing up the exact file types you indicate
c.. Norton Protection Center console integration allows
you to manage your
Norton security applications from a single, easy-to-use
interface
d.. Outbreak Alert trigger automatically initiates a back
up when Norton
Internet Security 2006 is notified about a virus or worm
outbreak (Norton
Internet Security 2006 sold separately)
I have not done the rebates yet.. Tomorrow... (I have to
return something
and need the receipt for that..and will do the rebates as
soon as I get
home...Promise.. haha!

So, I will let you know how it goes with Save & Restore.
 I figure a $15
investment..($10 purchase plus. tax, postage and envelope
and copying is
less than $15) is not too high a price to pay.. we shall
see.....

BTW, just a little update. I've been running Norton's
(Symantec)
Systemworks which, of course, includes Norton's AV. I also
used Outpost
Firewall, which I decided to abandon as it wasn't playing
nicely on any of
my computers lately. Outpost Firewall and Microsoft just
don't seem to play
well together any more. Sooooooooooo Given the
firewallproblem, and the
fact that Systemworks doesn't run on Vista, I decided to buy
multi-license
versions of Norton's Internet Security and load it on all my
computers,
whether Vista or WinXP.
On this laptop which runs WinXP Pro, I started to load
Norton's Internet
Security and thought "hey, why not delete just the AV
portion of Systemworks
and leave the tools like Norton's defrag program?"

I did, and it works just fine!!

Soooo The learning is that on a WinXP computer, if you have
Systemworks
(which hasn't been updated for Vista yet)and want to go to
Norton's Internet
Security for AV and Firewall, you don't have to give up all
the other
Systemworks tools. Just remove the AV portion and leave the
other parts of
the program in tact. I'll be loading Internet Security on a
Vista computer
next week, but without Systemworks.
