I used to love my Brother MFC 420CN all-in-one
printer/multifunction center.
Now I plan on getting rid of it as soon as the
ink runs dry. Well, I might
keep it for the FAX function but that is all.
It seems that if you leave the printer turned on,
it will automatically
clean itself every so often, whether it needs it
or not and use your
expensive ink to do it! There is no way to
adjust or control the frequency
based on useage or environmental conditions. And
it reserves the last 20%
of the ink for cleaning, just in case you are
slow to replace an empty
cartridge.
This means that even if I never print a color
page, I will spend about $70 a
year buying color ink.
Also, the printer will not print anything if any
ink cartridge is empty.
That means if magenta runs out I can not print a
black only document until I
replace the empty magenta cartridge.

Well, I am not a big fan of Hewlett-Packard but my HP
Photosmart 3210
All-in-One will continue to print with the black ink after
one of the colors
runs out. First one I have had that did that. Having said
that, I will
never buy another one because it will not print odd size
cards and envelopes
from my many greeting card programs. It is programmable to
do that but it
just won't do it after setting all the properties correctly.
I finally
ordered a cheap refurbished Epson C88 for doing envelopes
and it does a
great job. The HP does a good job of copying and
scanning---and printing if
I only need standard size pages.
