OK...I just had similar issues with my two year old HP and
the motherboard
went out. I didn't replace it, I replaced the computer as
it also had
stopped recognizing the USB ports altogether (also a known
bug of HP
computers although I didn't know that when I bought it). I
went through 3
different modems to get one that worked and after four
attempts to get the
card reader to work, I just gave up and used an external one
we had...until
the USB ports stopped working. HP was, eventually, sending
new parts but
it just wasn't worth the aggravation of an hour on the
phone, going over
the same information with three or four people whose accent
got
progressively heavier and harder to understand.
