I hear you on the help people getting harder to understand.
Don't think it's the mother board as the 2nd hard drive
works ok.
Also noticed that it is a lot quieter today. not a good
sign. It always made some noise.

Mine didn't give me a chance to back anything up, however
the hard drive
was fine. I got the new computer and even before booting it
up the first
time, I dropped the HP drive in. The new one booted up and
was fine. I am
using HP. I have no interest in Vista and won't upgrade to
it until forced
to....lol. Did some clicking and not only was the second
drive showing up,
it actually showed up as HP_Pavilion and it's recovery
partition is listed
too. I was really glad not to have lost everything. Now
I'm slowing
installing what I need on the new drive and will at some
point wipe the HP
one and use it for storage and backup.

I wasn't expecting issues like that with a two year old
computer. My
original Sony Vaio from 1997 still works just fine. Without
any additions
other than memory, it runs Win2000. It's slow, of course,
but
reliable. It is still here because it's saved us a couple
of times when we
needed info off a hard drive on a dead computer. I remember
when I bought
it (state of the art at the time) I thought that I'd never
in the world
need anything else. It had a 1GB hard drive. How could
anyone need that
much space...lol. Shows what I knew...lol

To say I am spoiled is an understatement when it comes to
computers. I have 2 GBs of RAM and when I paint, it's
fast.

Now I'm trying to learn 3d programs and the rendering is
slow.
I downloaded Teragen and it will make good landscapes but
rendering the image can take an hour or more. Is this
usual?

Would it help to put another GB of RAM into my computer?

If you're running WinXP, you might want to go for another
2GB. Do you know
what make/model mainboard you have? I'll check and see if
there are any
reported issues with running the maxinum amount on it.

Nothing so far. Do you also know the brand of memory you
have installed?
Is it the same as what you're thinking of adding?

Computer is :
     Gateway 710 2900330 4000926

2048 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot 'J5G1' has 512 MB
Slot 'J5G2' has 512 MB
Slot 'J5H1' has 512 MB
Slot 'J5H2' has 512 MB

This is what their memory thingie says I need:

Mfr. Part #: 5000694
Item #: 6617589
In-Stock
Usually Ships in 2-3 Days

      Price: $87.47

Now the problem with Gateway is I can only buy 512 MB
of
RAM (they don't have 1 GB memory sticks) and it says I have
4
banks -- well if that's true, I've already used the 4 banks
with
the 4 sticks I now have in it.

Ewwwwwww! I absolutely HATE when manufacturers do this to
people (fll up
all of the slots and then imply that you can only use THEIR
memory sticks)!

Ok, I'm feeling a little better. :O)
I'll get the low down and let you know what I learn. My aim
here is to see
if this mainboard will allow other manufacturer's memory to
be used. If it
can, you'd need to buy 1GB sticks and replace all of the
current ones. Are
you comfortable with that (both cost and working in side the
PC)?

I put this memory in so that doesn't scare me -- cost well
that
might be a problem but if I need it, I need it (smile).
This is what Gateway says:

Number of Memory Slots on Board: 4 (2 banks of 2)

Maximum Amount / Type of RAM that can be Installed:
     4096MB DDR PC3200

      Notes:

      Installed in pairs of modules.

Of course you can replace their memory with any other sticks
you can find,
at of course, a cheaper price. The standards are established
by MS and the
MoBo makers will not deviate from that.
