Have my new computer up and running. Everything went
smoothly. Installed
the RAM, CPU and heatsink ( hope I put enough Arctic Silver)
video card,
and wired it up. Booted, went into the bios it had already
seen the SATA
drive. Set it to boot from the CD and loaded Windows right
up. Now I
need some advice. Should I load the mobo drivers off the CD
or go to the
Asus site and download the newest ones? How about the bios?
Also, since
I'm not using RAID, would it be better not to install those
drivers? I
know we had bad problems with my grandson's box when we
installed them.

If you have to ask that, you've probably put in the right
amount. Most people ask if they've put in too much, cause
its spilling over after they squeeze on the heat sink to the
processor.

You might varying opinions. I like to use what came with the
motherboard, only cause its specific to your board and you
know you're not going to accidentally grab the wrong drivers
or such. And, after you use the ones that came with the
retail package, I would not update the BIOS or chipset
drivers unless you have a specific reason to do so...
meaning, there's a feature that needs upgrading that you
need, or you're having problems with something that an
upgrade would fix.

If you're not using RAID, and the mobo doesn't require it,
there's no reason to install the RAID drivers.

Sweet! I love it when a plan comes together. :O)

I've already seen Troth's reply and have little to add. He
and I feel
basically the same way about the BIOS & drivers issues.
Personally, I will
check the mainboard's maker occasionally to see what the
newer BIOS versions
offer. If there's a fix for something that concerns me,
I'll download and
run it. Otherwise, I leave it until I see what the next one
adds.

However, I would like for you to go back into the BIOS and
see where your
memory timings are set. If it's set to Auto (most likely
the default), see
if it also shows the timings it's using. They'll be grayed
out if they show
(since it's set to Auto). If they're not showing, change
the option to
Manual and see what they say without making any other
changes. After
writing them down, change it back to Auto before backing out
of the BIOS (or
you can just tell the BIOS to discard any changes and
reboot). I just want
to make sure you're getting the best performance out of that
high
performance memory you bought.

Peace,
GMan

GMan,

Everything is set to auto and there seem to be a lot of
settings, here's
how it reads

tRRd
tRC
tWR
tWTR
tREF
tRD
tRFC
Async Latency

This is greek to me. Which ones should I check and or
change? I notice
it suggest to set memory timings to optimal.

It's OK.  I understand Greek.        d;O}

The RAM you have is easily able to achieve certain timings
that this board
probably won't use without help. I was hoping you'd be able
to tell me what
the settings are right now before we start so I don't have
you doing things
you don't need to rework.

Ok,

I guess the G stands for Greek I'm
sorry, I can't see how to
change them from auto to manual. I have CPU-Z installed and
it gives
some info. Would that help?

Jo Ann,
I never fully trust the output that any software gives
about the BIOS
(it's too far removed from the mainboard to be completely
accurate), but I'd
still like to know what it's telling you. The important
parts are the
timings (the ones you've already typed out to us), the
"T" setting (which
will show as T1, T2, T2.5, T3, etc.) and the memory or RAM
voltage (which
will probably be somewhere between 1.8 to 2.8 volts).

As for changing it to "Manual", when you're at
the page that reports
that it's set to "Auto", use the arrow keys to
highlight the word "Auto".
Press the Enter key to bring up the possible options and
then use the arrow
keys again to highlight "Manual". Press your ESC
key to return to the full
page and write down the settings it shows. When you've
recorded all of
them, head to the Exit page and choose the option to
"Ignore all changes and
reboot" or something to that effect. This will leave
your BIOS exactly the
way it was before you even entered it.

Peace,
GMan

GMan,

When I highlight the auto setting and hit enter, all I get
are numbers
from 1-15. Don't see anything on voltages here either.

The voltages are shown in a different page. I know it's a
hassle to have
you keep rebooting to go back into the BIOS, but can you
tell me the numbers
that are shown (along with the setting's name)?

GMan,

The hardware monitor tells me,

Vcore voltage 1.32V
3.3 Voltage 3.39V
5v 4.99V
12V voltage 12.03v
