If you want to buy one rather than build one
check out the Compaq and
E-machine computers at Wal-Mart. Packages
without a monitor start at about
$300 for a 3GHz with DVD burner and Vista Home
basic.

My Uncle has an eMachine and got it at Wal-Mart. That was
the first I had
heard of an eMachine and I thought he was mixed up about
what he had! He
finally convinced me it was a "real" brand.

I had an HP Pavilian just over two years old. It took me
three tries to
get a working modem (and then it was so old it almost never
connected above
33. I finally took a six year old modem out of another
computer that would
connect at 42 regularly. The card reader never did work.
They'd send one,
I'd try it. It wouldn't work. I finally just hooked up an
external one we
had here and gave up. It was always one to two hours
talking to 4 or 5
different people and it just wasn't worth the hassle. A
couple of months
ago, the USB ports stopped working. Some research online
turned up the
information that HP knew that happened but had no fix for
it. It also
happened with another company (Dell I think) but they did
have a fix (which
wouldn't work on HP). By using the old printer port and a
non USB mouse, I
was getting along with it. Then one day I rebooted.
Normally I
thought. However 2/3 of the way through I got a black
screen that said
'hardware failure' and that was it.

Motherboard was gone. Frankly I had no desire to put a new
one in since it
hadn't impressed me with its reliability. I did some
research online and
found out that eMachines actually have a pretty good rep for
being decent
inexpensive computers. I got one on sale at Circuit City
(who actually had
them cheaper than Best Buy) and I really like it. It's fast
and isn't
loaded with a lot of eMachine software (my HP was full of HP
crap that I
spent days removing and never did get it to reboot faster).
So far, while
it's only been a couple of months, I really like the
eMachine. I dropped
the old HP hard drive in before I even booted it up the
first time and on
start there it was labeled HP_Pavilian and HP_Recovery.

This one boots or reboots in a fraction of the time the HP
did. Money was
important and eMacine was a good deal for me. And if it
only lasts a
couple of years, at least I don't have a huge investment in
it....smile.
