While for $500 you may not find a top-of-the-line model in
terms of benchmarks, with $500 you CAN find a solid system
that can go head-to-head with other more expensive systems
with the only true lacking issue being
"resource-intensive" games that you might not be
able to play without a few upgrades here and there.
For $500 or less, you can most definitely buy a decent
system.
