Christine,
This became a question for me when the time change
rules (law?) were
changed. This is what I think happens; Windows will update
the time only when a
patch tells it to. So, if you don't install the patch, the
time change will
occur under the old rules. I installed the patch when it
became available. Also,
I agree with you about IE7. I'm not installing it until I
have to.

So where is the patch? I have been thru 3 notes with links
and still don't
know where the patch is..???...I HATE that when a site
offers info but you
have to go round in circles instead just Patch and then
download. I never
can figure that all out..I get lost.

-=PCTechTalk=- Re: time patch

Hi, I have installed all of the automatic updates for XP
SP2, *except* for
IE7, which like so many other people, I do not want until I
absolutely have
to do it. But, after going to MS Updates page and reading
the information, I
have no idea if the 'time patch' is installed or not.

One MS Knowledge Base article tells you that 'the current
blah blah
supersedes the old blah blah". I looked for the update
in my Add/Remove
Programs. they say it came out in November 2006 (which I
understood to be
the 'time patch', but I could be wrong),

Although I see that there are updates installed for November
2006 on my PC,
I don't see anything with the number they give. Now it is
most assuredly
possible that I am mistaking a KB number with an Article
number (are they
the same?). They mentioned the old number as 931186 and the
new as 928388.

So although my state does utilize the DST, (I like the Fall
behind--but NOT
the get-up-for-crying-out-loud-an-hour-earlier time), I'm
still in the dark
(heheh) about whether or not I am patched.

I did read some blogs about making the transition
easier...like using the 3
days prior to the actual change to go to bed a bit earlier,
thereby making
getting up easier. Now I am a definite nite-owl and have
never, ever willing
gotten up early, but am forced by circumstances to get up at
an indecent
hour, to cook breakfast and shove 2 teen-aged boys out the
door and
(hopefully) on their way to high school. Ah well, such is
life.

So...back to my actual question, how do I know if I'm 'time
patched' before
it's too late. Oh no, another pun.

Trying to remember the cell phones, VCR, and all the clocks
in the house and
everything else that thinks it has to run on time,

Sammi

I don't think that all techtalk email is coming thru to
me... so if this is
a repeat of another post, please forgive. the below is a
copy of mail I
sent out to all my end users wednesday.... the links still
appear to work
this morning. hope this helps.

Windows
One of the first patches that should be applied is the
Microsoft patches for
Windows XP. The patch can be downloaded here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=66F
1420C-DF2D-400B-A8A9-EF9061A9A3CA&displaylang=en

or here: http://tinyurl.com/2ylwd3 [if the above link is unclickable]

It should also be noted that the patch for Windows XP
requires XP SP2 to be
installed, if you have not already done so. Download the
above reference
file to your Desktop, double click it to run. If your
system has already
been updated, you will get a set up error, if this happens,
just click OK
and delete the downloaded file.

If you are still running Windows 2000 you will have to do a
bit more work
for the time change. Microsoft has released KB article
914387 which outlines
the process you must go to for the change. The method we are
recommending is
to download the TZEdit tool from Microsoft.

http://download.micr
osoft.com/download/5/8/a/58a208b7-7dc7-4bc7-8357-28e29cdac52
f/TZEDIT.exe

or http://tinyurl.com/2gd872

Once installed, you can run this tool to manually change
your time zones.
This method will require you to manually change the dates
for DST. It will
unzip by default to C:Program FilesTZEdit. Find the
TZEdit.exe
executable file in C:Program FilesTZEdit, double click it
and change the
beginning and ending dates as reflected below by selecting
your time zone
and clicking the Edit button, after changing the dates,
click OK and Close.

Please note the new dates:
DST begins on the SECOND Sunday in March
DST ends on the FIRST Sunday in November

This message is mainly for people who use the Outlook
Calendar for
scheduling, reminders and appointments.

If you are running Outlook 2000, XP, 2002 or 2003, you will
need to run a
patch to correct time issues that will occur with the change
in Daylight
Saving Time this year.

The patch can be found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e34
3a233-b9c8-4652-9dd8-ae0f1af62568&DisplayLang=en

or here: http://tinyurl.com/ytgak4

To install, double click on the downloaded file, click the
check box at the
bottom to accept the EULA, click Continue. Change your
Original Time Zone
to Central Time [USA & Canada] and click OK. The
program will look for
dates that need updating and will advise you of changes
being made, click OK
again to exit the program.

you're done! and hopefully, this will be the very last
patch for the
Daylight Saving Time change we will have to do this year.

Hi Suzanne,
I'm afraid your ISP (Bellsouth.net) has been blocking
some of the
messages coming to/from PCTT (actually anything from
Freelists.org). They
seem to be treating them as Spam. I sent off a note to them
earlier today
asking them to investigate this and reclassify the Freelists
domain as a
newsgroup. I included the headers to make their job easier,
but I have no
idea how long it will take to receive an answer. In the
meantime, you might
want to consider switching your membership to another email
addy that uses a
different domain, such as Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo.

Just in case this doesn't come to you through PCTT, I've
also sent it
directly to your addy, so you may receive it twice.
:O)

Peace,
GMan

No problem, Suzanne. I'm doing the same for all members who
are going
through this (and it's not just Earthlink that's got the
blocker going). I
have a feeling this is the result of a Spam blocking third
party that these
ISPs subscribe to for their members. If I can isolate the
guilty 3rd party,
I stand a much better chance at making a difference for you
guys. If not,
they may just treat us like Spammers and ignore my requests
for review.

I'll keep you informed of any progress.

Peace,
GMan
