I wrote about this problem a while back, but life became way
too complicated
and I didn't get back to my DIL about it until yesterday.

Here's the problem:
They were 'gifted' with a Gateway PC which is running W98
SE. We have never
been able to complete running ScanDisk. I have tried it in
SafeMode, using
Standard. It does say that there are no errors. But it does
show that there
is a 172,xxx bad sector.

When we try to run a Thorough ScanDisk, it always gets to a
certain point
and then stalls out. I don't know how else to try it, except
in SafeMode.

Yesterday I tried using the Reinstall CD. I thought at one
point that it was
going to wipe and reinstall Windows. We have the CDs for it,
and ran the SIW
program to pull up the Product ID numbers and so forth. But
alas, it came up
with the same notice that it could not complete ScanDisk, so
it didn't
reformat and install.

Any suggestions on how to do this are most welcome!

TIA,
Sammi

Sammi,
Is the CD a restore disk from Gateway or is it a regular
Windows install
CD? Also, are you trying to avoid a reformat with that CD?

Peace,
GMan

I would recommend a complete format and reinstall... though,
if you go this route you need to make sure you backup all
the things you want to keep.
If there's anything wrong with that drive, as it seems tere
is, the format will at the very least "rope off"
the bad sectors and allow you to work in peace on the good
sectors.

Hi GMan, we are not trying to avoid a reformat...we want to
do that. The
disk we used is a Gateway restore disk. There are 3 CDs, one
is a
program restore and one is a system restore and the last one
is the
Windows 98 that comes with it.
