Sir Troth...afaik it is the full install, and I believe it
to be W98 SE. The
CD says something like 'only for new PC'. Unfortunately I am
not at their
house right now, so I can't look at the actual disk. They
have 3 CDs. One
that says W98, and one says Program Restore (or something
similar...I should
have written it down) and one for System Restore. Printed on
it says 'will
restore to the way it was in the beginning'. Geez, I really
should have
written it down!
They are not home right now for me to call and get the exact
wording. When
we tried to format & reinstall, it said to follow the on
screen prompts. We
did that, selecting the 'format and reinstall' choice.
So dratted sorry I didn't get the exact wording.

Sammi, that Windows 98 CD you have, that is the full install
disc? And, is
it Win98, or Win98SE?

Sammi,
Don't worry about the exact wording on those other
disks. This will be
easy to fix since she has that full Win98 install CD. Since
Troth and I are
taking you in the same direction (I know him that well.
lol), I'm going to
let him finish the details for you.
In the meantime, ask your friend to create a new Win98
startup disk
(Start > Settings > Control Panel and then click on
the Startup tab and
follow the directions). She will need that floppy for the
directions Troth
will be posting. If she already has one, have her make a
new one anyway,
just in case the old one has developed any corrupted files
since it was
made. :O)
Peace,
GMan

I haven't worked with a Windows 98 install in quite awhile.
So, bear with me, as I am very rusty. And, I'm sure Gman can
hop right in to correct me should I need it.
First thing, download a copy of the boot floppy I use.
You'll need it.
You can download it here:
http://www.si
rtroth.com/boot_floppy.zip
Unzip and place all the files onto a floppy. Take that
floppy with you... along with the Windows 98SE CD.
On the computer in question, you'll probably need to go into
the BIOS to make sure its set up to boot from the floppy. Go
into the BIOS and look for the boot sequence. I'd have it in
there as FLOPPY, then CD, then HARD DRIVE.
Ok... place the CD and FLOPPY both into the machine. Restart
the machine.
The floppy should start up and proceed to your beloved DOS.
Once you get to the A:> prompt, you will type in:
FORMAT C: [ENTER]
It will ask if you are sure. You hit Y.
It'll format the whole thing for you.
After the format is done, you will again be at the A:>
prompt.
Go ahead and type:
D: [ENTER]
Now... this is assuming the D drive is the CD-Rom. If its
not, it'll probably give you an error. If you're in the D
drive ok, it'll say:
D:>
You can actually type
DIR [ENTER]
and that'll show you what's on the CD. If you're on the CD,
you should see the following directories in there:
add-ons
cdsample
drivers
tools
win98
If you see that, you're on the correct drive.
Type in:
CD WIN98 [ENTER]
You should now be here:
D:WIN98>
Now you can type in what Gman had said:
SETUP /IS
If Gman thinks you should use the other switches also, he'll
chime in here. For myself, I see no purpose to use the other
switches, which sort of make it more automated. Might be
good, I guess. Heck, actually, I would try WITHOUT using the
/IS switch also first, cause now that the drive is formatted
you might not have that problem anymore. But... either way
is fine.
Anyways... this will start the install. The rest is just
following onscreen instructions.
Again... I am going off the top of my head. But it should be
accurate.
