well - I went ahead and tried running windows update and
downloaded the non-essential updates that were there (the ms
website said something about windows update). it rebooted
fine - and didn't come up with that error again, so here's
crossing fingers!

Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Dell laptop problem - insert cd
My laptop froze. It has win xp media edition 2005 - the
screensaver is what froze. Happens often. This time tho, it
was different - you could see my desktop. ctrl/alt/dl said
it was the screensaver that was not responding. I got things
closed - all but that wouldn't end. It asked to send report
to microsoft - that wouldn't end either. I tried everything
that I could think of - finally hit the on /off button.
turned it off/ turned it on. Now, I have a box there that
says:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
windows file protection:
Files that are required for windows to run properly have
been replaced by unrecognized versions. tTo maintain system
stability windows must restore the original versions of
these files.
Insert cd now.
ok - I'm thinking, phew! I demanded that Dell give me a cd
after I got the laptop - it's labeled operating system -
already installed on your computer - reinstalation dvd
microsoft windows xp media center edition 2005.
so! I put that in my drive... and it says.... wrong cd.
so!! what do I do????
I can cancel it, or retry. obviously, retry won't work.
cancelling will what? make me unstable? <smile>
