Tom and Peter, I found the fix for this. Type each line at
the
cmd prompt.

net stop helpsvc
cd /d %windir%\pchealth\helpctr
rd packagestore /s /q
rd installedskus /s /q
cd binaries
start /w helpsvc /svchost netsvcs /regserver /install
start /w helpsvc /register

The index.dat file I mentioned below WAS indeed deleted, and

doing that above re-creates the index.dat file, and now
System
Info is working again.

Ho boy, I'm back to not receiving your posts again Peter!
I
found this post of yours in the archives.

Good link, thanks, and I found out what version I was
running
with Belarc, I forgot all about that. You can also tell by
checking the "wscript" file on the HD, hovering
it or looking
at the properties also told me the version.

Now this brings up another question. I have MSjava (or
script)
in a file I saved from long ago, and I install it on a new
SP2
install. It is version 5.0xx, and I had on my PC
v5.6.0.8820
installed and I have no idea from where it came! I also
have
Sun installed since some sites must have it. So where might
I
have d'loaded v5.6.0.8820?? Oh well, I found the d'load
for it
here.

As for the System Info not working, I found this quote:
-----------
"A index.dat file has been deleted, and that's why
when some
run msinfo32 they get the help center instead of system
information.

I had this problem, and just now got it figured out, I
restored
a new image and system information was working great, I then
ran Spider which cleans temp files, I saved the report
rebooted
and system information was not working.

I looked at what spider deleted and I found it deleted a
index.dat here
E:\\WINDOWS\\PCHEALTH\\HELPCTR\\OfflineCache\\inde
x.dat
I opened and image and restored just this dat, and now my
system information is working, so this dat file is the cause
for the problem."
----------

So, apparently I'll never be able to fix this on this
particular install. I did however find a way to get it
working
manually, and that's by typing "msinfo32 /categories
+all" in
the Run command. I'm trying to create a batch file right
now
for that, but so far have been unsuccessful. The d'load
link
for the batch file on this page is bad of course!
http://www.k
ellys-korner-xp.com/xp_m.htm , you can get to the
area by searching for MSinfo and you'll find the text in
that
area. Also, the directions for creating the batch file is
also
bad! It doesn't work. So I'm working on that.

BTW, most all browsers support JavaScript, it's not an
installable application.
And yes the MS JVM is deleted by SP2. Now you must use
another
from Sun, IBM, or others.
Enjoy your Java ;)

I just clicked to open my "System information"
area, and M$
"Help and Support Center" opens up!! This
is....WAS under
"Accessories", "System Tools", then
"System Information". What
the heck could have happened to it, and how now do I get to
this area? I think the file was MSinfo32.exe, and when I
manually click it, the Help and Support Center still opens
up!
I tried a command line of "systeminfo",
"systeminfo /s
Computer" and "systeminfo /s [my
computername]" and that did
nothing, it opened up a blank command "DOS"
window for a few
seconds then closed!

I needed to get to that area to try and find out which
version
of M$ JavaScript I have installed. So does anyone know how
to
find this out? I believe JS is NOT part of XP SP2, but I
think
it's part of XP. My XP CD is now a
"slipstreamed" CD since I
integrated SP2 in it, so I have no idea if the default XP
version is installed, or if SP2 deletes that.
