I just got off the phone with a tech with Linksys. It boils
down to a
DNS problem according to the tech.
I have a Digital Surveillance System (DSS) using Windows XP
and I have
acquired a static IP address for the computer with the DSS
installed on
it. I am using bellsouth DSL and have their modem and a
Linksys router.
I have my normal shop computer and it gets to the internet
just fine
using the same system as above.
I have configured the router just fine but when, from the
computer 2, I
ping the IP address of Yahoo.com for instance it give me the
4 returns I
expect. If I ping "Yahoo.com" it can not find the
server. The tech tells
me that is a DNS problem and I should check with my software
people.
(Computer 2 will not connect to the internet.)
Does anyone understand my problem and can afford some help?
The software
is XP and I have no security installed like firewall etc. I
turned XP's
off. (I am in over my head.)

Larry, does #2 connect directly to the net? Have you
disabled the DSS
and attempted to connect?
Have you checked your HOSTS file, at
C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetc for
any erroneous entries on both computers?
What is the vendor of the DSS? Does the DSS have a built in
server?

Hi Larry,
From the CMD window type ipconfig /all this will give you
information
about your DNS servers IP address. If the IP is not listed
or is
incorrect for the DNS servers. Check the adapter
configuration in
Control Panel, Network Connections, Local Area Connection,
Click
Properties In the Local Area Status window. In the Local
Area Connection
Properties window Click once on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
to select it
then right click to get the properties for TCP/IP ensure
that obtain an
IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address
automatically are
checked.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply Peter and I offer what I know below.

Answer: I do not know how to do that. I have been thinking
that because
I have Win XP and IE installed as a program I would be able
to connect
with the DSS in "minimize".

C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetc for

>Answer: Again I would not be able to recognize an
erroneous entry if I
saw it.

built in server?
> Answer: The only info I can find is that it is named
NV3000 or NV DVR and I am sure it has or is a
Server as well. What I have found out due to your questions
is that it
talks about getting a static IP which I have thru bellsouth
and it talks
about opening ports. Specifically 80, 5550, 5555, 5800,
5900, 9999. It
also says to make sure these are open on the DSL modem and
Linksys. I
could send the page I am talking about but not sure it would
go thru.
I hope this helps and I have done all the other things like
getting the
ipconfigs etc.

Thanks for the reply Tom and I have been all through that
with the tech
on my Linksys. At the end they determined it was a DNS issue
and said to
go back to the mfg of the software.
I have been under the impression that I should be able to
get to the
internet without considering the NVDVR system. That may not
be true.
Check my answers to Peter.

Hi Larry,
I've read your responses and I'm still a little hazy on your
setup. Does
your modem plug into the router or into your main computer?
What type of
modem is it? Is it just a straight modem or is it one of
those modem/router
devices that plug into your network router? Be more specific
about your
physical hardware arrangement.
No matter what you are running you need to be able to
establish an internet
connection first with the computer that has the DSS software
on it.
